Few Pics From Florida Trip (Turbo 318is)

The wife and I got back from our 2 week Florida trip about 3 weeks ago and I am just now getting around to uploading pics. We only stopped at one place really to take pics of the car because we were so busy with family and Disney, but here is a sampling of what we did take.

We liked them... and the car did wonderfully over the 2800 mile round trip.

The car looks great! The view isn't bad either. Oh how I miss the sun...

Those wheels actually look pretty good when they're not spaced out like a mini-lowrider

That is glorious to hear about that car used for a family trip.

Did you take down any mileage stats?

^Yes, it was a little disappointing for me though. Highway only we got about 28 mpg or about 330 miles per tank. We got about 23 mpg in the city with mixed driving. We spent right about $420 total on gas for the trip with premium ranging from 3.53/gal to 3.89/gal.

I used to get about 37 mpg highway when I had my 36lb injectors even after the turbo. I must have done something with the tuning after putting in the 46lb'ers. I think it is because I went from high impedance injectors to low impedance ones. It is just so much easier to tune the megasquirt for high impedance ones.

Think I'll order some high impedance 46lb'ers, do some tuning, and see if there is an improvement. It's funny, all my other gearhead friends are like... "what are you complaining about 28mpg for a$$hole?!"

EDIT: We did have the car loaded down with a minimum of an extra 200 pounds I would guess. Could be a contributing factor, but I still think it's the injectors.

            37mpg is pretty f'ing good man !

Shit - I suppose fuel economy could easily be a justification for FI..

^ the car won't get better gas mileage FI then it did NA, unless you change the gearing to take advantage of the additional power/to induce more load for teh bewst. unless you consider the fact that a FI M42 makes comparable power to a larger motor like an S50, which would suck more fuel..

28MPG is about what my eta gets, but this has gotta be loads quicker! your car looks great, and road tripping in a modified e30 is respectable.. especially with someone else!

^I hear you, but the car most certainly did get better mileage after the turbo with the 36lb injectors. I'm not crediting the turbo but the megasquirt for that. Something I changed in the tune after switching to the 46lb low impedance injectors changed the mileage considerably.

I'm surprised your eta only gets 28mpg... our eta (wife drives it to and from work) gets closer to 33-34. But I wouldn't trust it on a 2800 mile road trip. LOL we did take it to Dallas (~650 miles roundtrip) and crossed our fingers. It made it fine... though no AC sucked.

I'm glad the wife is as into BMW's as I am... we've had quite a few, and currently have 5. We had a blast on the trip with the car. LOL at one point a new camaro (v8) wanted to race and she was goes... "why didn't you drop it into third instead of just fourth when you took off?" I go... "I love you, and normally I would have done that hon. But we are currently 2000 miles from home and doing something catastrophic to the motor now would suck." Her response... "good point."

Looks good! That's pretty good MPG too for a boosted 318is.. My stock 318is was getting between 29-32 depending on wind/hills/what I ate for breakfast :)

Cool what part of Florida, I am assuming the Orlando area since you said Disney. I also took a two week trip to see my family, but instead we drove my wife's CR-V. I am also in TX and I loved the trip, it was the first time for me taking a trip that long, driving that is.

I thought turbo (not SC) was inherently good for economy – basically via ‘reuse’ of ‘free’ exhaust flow/pressure(?)

But I guess if you’re whippin’ cookies all day and drifting down to the grocery store – that’s not going to help economy either.. (or tires for that matter)
