    My e30 vert build/repair thread

I have to start out by apologizing to the r3v community. I've had my e30 for about a year now and have visited the forum on a frequent basis in search of advice, tips, and help with wrenching. I would like to contribute and give back to the community that has so inspired me to spend countless hours working on my ride. Thanks r3v!

Quick backstory: Purchased 1990 325i vert 5 speed in May of 2010 for $950. Exterior in good condition but needed a new top. Interior was perfect. Engine ran solid.
July of 2010: Installed new control arms, cabs, m3 rack, billstein hd's all around, e30 m3 springs in front, bavauto springs in rear.

January 2011: Swapped bottlecaps for 14" bbs bronze mesh wheels for $100.
February 2011: Plastic front bumper conversion (rear bumper awaiting in garage)
March 2011: Wife smashed the front-end into a delivery truck who pulled out in front of her. Bent the frame so insurance totalled the car but gave it back to me and reduced my settlement check from $2100 to $1900.:)

Plastic bumper and valence lived a short but sweet life. I've never really done frame and body work, but I figured I would give it a try. I found a buddy with a parts car who basically let me take anything I needed for $100. Got the hood, fender, grills, headlight, and valence. Next step was to straighten the frame. My buddy and I poured about 12 hours into getting everything pulled out.

I still have some tweaking and gaps to work out, but I'm not too concerned. Also, I found a nice little trunklid spoiler at the local Pick and Pull for $17.

Three weeks ago, I ran across these little beauties and decided to go crazy

    Sprayed everything I could find

I'm very pleased with the turnout. Even my buddy Toby joined the fun with his e28

We also drilled all bumper shocks that day and did a little bumper tuck. Things are starting to look good.

Tonight's progress involved some body work. In preparation for the paint, I decided to grind down all of the dents and rough spots so I could hit them with bondo

Here's how she looked a few hours ago

Well, that's all for the pictures. I'll be picking up some Sportmax 002 15x8s this weekend. Those might call for some new springs, but we'll figure that out later. Thanks for reading and bearing with my pictures.

Goood build. Primer that exposed metal as you'll develop instant rust.

A few updates to from the past 2 weeks:
This is my first time (and hopefully my last time) doing bondo work. The process is very tedious and my perfectionist tendencies don't help matters.

This week, I'm hoping to tackle the final portions of the front-end that I need to sand-smooth to prep for paint. My goal is to have it in the paint-shop by next week.
Also, as you can see, I picked up some new sneakers: XXR 002 15x8 et0. 195/50/15's in the front and 205/50/15's in the rear.
I have a strong hunch that I will eventually paint these wheels, but that will be another day.

Also, the initial bronze hood I picked up for replacement had some previous damage that I was hoping to work out. The body work was frustrating the heck out of me and to my surprise, I found a straight (black) hood on CL last weekend for $30. nice. It has a few minor dings on it...nothing a little filler can't take care of:

Also, my old trunklid had existing hail damage and I was (again) cursing the world trying to get the bondo and sanding to work out. Lucky for me this past weekend was 1/2 off day at the Pick and Pull. Picked up a straight trunklid w/o the brakelight for $20.

Thanks for looking and feel free to give suggestions/criticisms

Finally prepped and ready for paint. Northern California rain has made my progress slow-go. I plan on having it into the paint shop on Friday and should see it back by next week. I'll keep you all updated.

Last thing, I'm strongly considering selling off the XXR wheels and sticking with my gold bbs 14s. There's just something off about those XXR wheels...maybe the front poke, but I can't seem to put my finger on it yet.

Quick update: Just picked up from the paint shop. All in all, I'm very pleased with the outcome. A lot of time was spent getting that body prepped and, yes, a lot of guide coats were sprayed. Here's a quick picture of the car before I drove home. Hope fully tomorrow I can finish up the assembly and get some more pictures for you guys.

                Still debating the wheel options...

Thanks everyone for the comments! Sunexim, I've seen professional paintjobs with countless hours and dollars involved to the point where the car should look brand new. Yet still the quality is never matched to those robots on the assembly line. Manufacturer paint is always the most preferred way to go. With that said, for my 21 year old >$1000 bmw, I am rather content with my efforts.

Update* Finally got everything reassebled. All the moldings, bumpers and grills have been painted with plasti-dip. It's looking real clean and I hope to have some updated pics for anyone who cares tomorrow. Thanks again everyone!

I was able to sneak out of the house today and snap some decent shots. I haven't played with the whole roll yet, but here are some teasers:

That's what I got so far. Keep in mind that I still need to throw my is spoiler on the trunklid (along with the emblems). I also have a Volvo lip that I'm hoping to work with in place of the stocker lip current on the car.

Lastly, I'm still undecided on the XXR wheels I have in the garage. My only concern with those wheels is that I will need to go lower to accommodate....just not quite sure if I'm willing.

                              Thanks for reading!
