    just pick up a cheap BMW, gut it out, and strengthen key points, and you will be surprised how hardy these cars are.

    The E30 took the hard beating without a single thing breaking, except perhaps the LSD, which was crap to start with. It is now an open diff.

    The E28 took it quite well, but it was in terrible shape to begin with, the only thing that got really worse was the already non-attached shift linkage.

    you are a very contradictory person. ;)

    Beating old high mileage BMWs into the ground is what makes us build them back up again. It is also very handy as a diagnostic tool to reveal things that are soon going to go bad. For example, thanks to rally, I discovered that the shift linkage needs work, needs a new CSB, and both rear axles are trash. And they were bad before rally, but now I know for sure, and I know everything else is solid.
