    My Jeep Wrangler

So my YJ developed tap in the motor. :-( Likely a valve/lifter etc. For anyone who hasn't seen her here she is:

I was this close to doing a motor swab when I decided to just buy a TJ:
*These photos are all taken with a cell phone. Sold my camera and looking to buy a DSLR. If anyone's got a NIKON D3100 let me know, anyway:

99 3 inch lift 33" tires just got it Wednesday.

After about 13 harsh Chicago winters the frame looks like this:

Can't have that so bought a cheap angle grinder (ryobi $30 at the depot with 2 year warranty :-))

Decided I wanted to undercoat and remove rust before it got to cold. So stated taking it down to the bare metal:

Will be dropping the skid plate tomorrow:

A little "bare metal" primer on todays work (lots more to do):

Any advice on how to handle the springs:

Also decided to paint these ugly faded moldings with pickup bead liner for that rough textured look. The one I did do came out great, pics tomorrow:

    Working by Jeep light:

That's sweet! I bet it will outlast the TJ.

Whats crazy, is that the yj is 91 with 120k miles and the TJ is a 99 with 88k miles and the YJ has less rust.

The outside of the frame may look pretty now. But what about the inside? may want to start to spray oil down in it!

Wire wheels work a lot better and quicker on surface rust like that. Plus it can get in places the grinding wheel can't. Just a protip.
And just like JasonC said. Get some sealant inside of it too.

Sandblasting will be the easiest for the springs, but I wouldn't worry about them. Anything you put on them (Even powdercoating) will likely crack, get water in. and flake off anyways.

I read that a wire cup brush works best (not sure if this is what your referring). I tried one and worked fine

but then I tried this sand paper wheel and works like 1 million times better, last longer and does not throw metal all over the place.

              Worn down one:

Thanks for the tip, definitely will look into it.

OH! You used a flapper wheel. That's much better than a grinding wheel, ESPECIALLY for flat surfaces. That's perfect for that.
But you can get a wire wheel to get those pesky sheet metal corners, and getting into small places like the spring perch there.
                One such as this.

The wire cups are great for small areas or small surfaces. But not exactly anywhere near ideal for doing the whole damn thing. Using the flapper wheel was the proper choice.

That is a lot of rust. Hope you can get it all taken care of. Have fun with the truck, I have wanted a TJ forever.
