yeah, the older guys at my work, tell me all the time that back in the late 80's they installed M tech II kits WEEKLY on u.s. soldiers cars. as well as the 15" KING wheels(fake Alpinas)- so that would make sense with the chrome trim.
the changing of things for DOT, makes no sense though, not saying it isn't possible, who knows what he did with it when he was here, maybe he was swapping it over to Euro specs to keep the car here on the German system with plans to stay here?
glass makes no sense as well as the exhaust (euro and u.s. are the same)

Did you spy my plate? I have no holes for the US size plate. Kinda cool and annoying at the same time. Makes sense it was installed over there. Guess there wasn't a US spec MT2 bumper at the time.




BTW, know anything about the Oscam wheels on the car? They've been on it since new as well. All I've been able to find out is that they're Italian and haven't been made since the early 90s. Google pulls up nothing except people asking the same question as me.

As the story goes, it was ordered as a US spec so it had the M42.

It was bought by an airman stationed over there. It was ordered with the M-tech appearance package not the trim level, so no MT springs or shadowline. I like chrome so this isn't a problem for me.


In late 1993, I'm assuming his tour was over or was stationed in the US, he brought it over. In its time in Germany or where ever, records I've tracked down didn't indicate origin, a few things had been altered that didn't allow it to pass DOT.

Files from BMW of Atlanta (they performed the federalization) shows what was changed to meet specs, listed here is their words, not mine:

-Headlights changed
-Side markers installed (ruined the side bumper supports btw)
-"Light rewiring" -I think they meant butchering :(
-All glass minus the windshield was changed (still lacks DOT stamp I noticed)
-"Exhaust inspected and replaced"
-"Cluster modified"
-"Alarm system installed" (ripped this out recently)

The same family owned it since new, but going by the carfax it changed hands a few times between them. I know for a fact when the car was sold to my buddy who bought it, the wife got it in the divorce. However I wish she would have listed the mileage when she registered it instead of fucking exempt!



Anyway I've done a lot of back tracking to figure out the complete origin of this car. All I have are what records were given to me and stories I was told. Most of it I've been able to confirm through things like autocheck, dealership records, and state records. The only vague parts I'm still trying to clear up are what dealer it was purchased through, where it was overseas, and the official federalization papers. All I have is a title number given to it. So the quest continues!

If my paint weren't extremely chipped on the front edge and already generally fucked up over the whole hood I would probably go braless. I do like how it looks, though.

There's a butt load of bondo cracking underneath it. So it's my way of hiding it.
