RainierHooker bought a Buick (non-E30 content)

In the last week I've had a physical, a meeting with a physical therapist, a birthday, and I bought a Buick. I think that I may be old.

OK, maybe its not all that bad...

After toying with the idea of geting back to my pre-BMW roots I decided to start looking for another project. A few rules came about, it had to be American, it had to be rod-able, it couldn't be a common Chevy or Ford, and it had to be decent enough that I could attempt to have it on the road by the Viva Las Vegas rockabilly-car show in April.

I found the car on the CL qute some time ago and when the dealership that had it lowered thier price into the range of sanity I went and looked at it in person. Lets just say that it satisfied all my wants and needs enough that I bought it today and I'm picking it up tomorrow.

Anyway, the car is a 1938 Buick Special Business Coupe equipped with an OHV 248ci Strait-8 that makes an M30 look dainty. A previous owner started an amatuer restoration on it, but didn't complete it. Highlights of that include a not-quite-right re-upholstery job and a 10-footer Earl Scheib paint job. That said, it is 99% rust-free, the floor-boards are cleaner than any of my E30's somehow, and all the important bits are there.

    Here's a couple more pics:

PS: I'm going to attempt to drive this car from its current location south of Portland to Hillsboro tomorrow. Hillarity and more pictures are likely to ensue. If there is any odd traffic in the south or east ends of the PDX, deal with it...

My dad had a '40 Buick special business coupe and i drove it around quite a bit one summer when I was in HS. It was remarkably easy to drive. It also had the "three on the tree" which was neat.
Your signature picture has been removed since it contained the Photobucket "upgrade your account" image.

^Yes please... very nice. Good luck with the new ride and please keep this updated with progress should you decide to "fix" the previous "restoration."

I know nothing of old American cars... but would ove to own one someday.

Mostly at this point my plans are focused on getting the car running and driving reliably. Once that is accomplished, I'm going to undo all the poor resto work that has been done and work toward a mild, mostly stock 50's style rod. Pin-stripes, fat tires in back, stockers on a lowered front, and some engine-bay tinkering.
