I hope it's not actually MTL.... Should be ATF and in some cases gear oil (ATF for dd'd cars).

    That's my guess.

Any adverse running or sputtering? Or just the stank?

I'm betting that it's just random wires hacked in by the PO

^^^^ word, I'll investigate. Let you know.

as for the windows... i'm stupid. but it's a funny story.

So I get up around 0445 every day, out the door at 0500, and usually i need a little de-fogging action on the rear window, no biggie. But it's one of those things that I do without even thinking about it? you know where this is going... yup, I pushed that damn circuit breaker this morning instead of the rear defrost...

    doh!

That only one wire that passes from there is the crank sensor wire but again its only one single wire.. Those look like a bunch. You should expose those from the tape and see whats up/how many and if they connect to anything from both ends..

On etas, there is a wire that comes from that harness and connects underneath the block somewhere (sorry it's been a while since I've checked where). I'm pretty sure that's it.

    edit:
You can kind of see it in front of the valve cover in this picture:

Also looks like there is an unplugged yellow connector sitting there. Looks like an ETA valve cover, so I couldn't say for sure. On my "i", the plugs that look like that go to the temperature switch, and the coolant temp sensor. Does that bundle connect to that plug?

going to lunch, might grab a fuse #17 as a cheap diagnostic, don't own a multimeter.

And interior fan is working fine.

cut the zip tie and trace both ends, if you have a multimeter you can test for continuity if you can find at least one end

    1. Blank button on the dash.
    2. Your blower motor is the interior fan...

I don't know what those wires are, but I don't have any bundles like that sitting on top of my m20. I hope someone here can help you out.
