making some progress... and have a question

Slowing making some progress on the car. I completed the stereo install with a new head unit, speakers and e3012 luke box, which kicks ass. installed an is lip and some lens tint. now that it looks acceptable and sounds awsome I can focus on some more important things, ex. timing belt, clutch master, fix the cluster temp gauge, etc.







My question: During the stereo install I noticed my seat brackets are rusty. It looks like surface rust, but it seems to be all over.
1. Does this look dangerous to you guys?
2. How does this even happen? Is this... common? do i need pull the carpet to make sure the floorboard isn't also rusting? i haven't seen any major rust anywhere else on the car.

These pictures are of the drivers seat, but passenger side is similar.

Seat rails arent that bad. Take them out and clean them up with a wire brush and repaint. The will come out good as new as long as you dont cake the paint on and lube them up after. Start poking around to see if there is any rust but I highly doubt it.

Its a good thing you did that sub before the timing belt...... Wouldn't want to have a crappy stereo to listen to when your belt snaps.

ha buy a honda and see what real rust is. when you can stick your hand THROUGH the rear quarter panels, something is up

I hope to get some wheels sometime around christmas. Im still trying to decide what i want/can afford. I really want some BBS RS's... but $$$$$

The rust didnt look to severe to me. But it makes me nervous because I don't understand how it even got there in the first place. There should not be any water in that area of the car. And second, I survived into a near death car accident years ago, the only reason I'm still alive is because all the safety features of my old e30 worked, including the seat frame rails. rust = weak metal = me worried.

The timing belt is next on my list of repairs. Im basically gonna do a full tune up. timing belt, water pump, thermostat, spark plugs, oil change, new fuel filter, coolant flush.

I snapped some pictures of the finished center console now that i got it all back together. I needed a button blank and when I removed my 13 button obc to install the analog clock I found out i needed a bracket to install the clock. So i got the bracket from the dealer (which had to ship it from germany) and finished up.





O... and i put the chrome kidney back in. I am really on the fence with the french yellow's. we'll see how i feel about them in a week or so

Looks good. Forgive my ignorance, but what is that little knob just above your head unit? I'm still pretty new and I have never seen one there before.

You are right that its not stock. That is my subwoofer gain level control.

I popped out the stock fader and the button blank in the slot next to it. I took the blank and used my dremel to drill a hole big enough for the level control structure to fit through. I super-glued it in place, put the knob back on the face, wired it up and popped it back in place. Today i got another blank from the dealer to fill the spot i pulled from. i didn't want the stock fader in the dash because it wasn't being used.

well, i wasnt the brain child on this one. I was trying to figure out the best place for the level control and i had thought about using a blank, but i got the inspiration from one of luke's diy posts (stereoinstaller1)
