    New Member New Car

hello all, i just picked up a 1985 318i automatic that was produced in December of 84. Im a recently graduated industrial design student so i have a long list of things ive already envisioned doing with this car. Unlike many of you this is my first BMW and recently found interest in these cars particularly. Ive only had two months of research in this cars mechanics and history so please be nice.

So far ive found the e30 to be , in my opinion, the "last" of its kind, design wise. I learned that the E21's came in either four cylinder or six and that the four bangers came with only 2 headlights whereas the 4 came on the six. after that it became standard for BMW in all their cars. This leads me to my concept, of further back dating and simplifying my e30, similar to Singer and their 911.

Ive found the metal bumpers to fit the cars origin and the euro bumpers are clearly the most natural for this chassis, however i would like to further reduce some lines and holes. Since i have the four cylinder i would like to really bring out the Sunday back roads cruiser and the car you take a girl out to a picnic in. So besides general maintenance and repairs i intend on creating a brand of back dated accessories for the e30. Luggage set, picnic set, trunk and roof luggage rack, matching tie down straps, and matching interior trim and accessories.

Ive also found many opportunities for improvement with the cars interior. I plan on using the parts i do have for molds to create vacuum formed reproductions and skins/caps that can later be wrapped or painted in any color or fabric.

So far i dont have photos of the car but its nothing special yet anyways. Blue Interior with the blue and gray checkered door cards, and a real funny looking thing in between the seats that has the letters PRND321 on it. The seats are all chewed up and the dash has 2 cracks. All gauges work, stereo works, but ac heat and power steering do NOT.

Why would you put plasti dip on your high beams? lol Did you convert a kids play table as a roof rack?

Looks like it once was a nice e30 to start with.

as i said i did both just to get an idea. practice models... Im considering making light covers like normal off road lights. and i dont ever use them anyways . unless maybe i was going off to make my own path. ill be making my own legs for the rack soon. as stated before, i found that the e21 four cylinders only had 2 headlights and since mines a 4 banger i was curious how it would look with only 2

okay this is a shitty lil chop i did to try and show my vision. this was done on paint in maybe 10 minutes so bear with me. I got a couple of friends at home with e30s and i mentioned the idea to them and they also cringed but id at least like to try and see what happens. The logistics are all easy to work out, ie turn signals, high beams, grille. i think i see a trend starting in the comments but...love it or hate it?

I think it's kinda cool - original anyway. Do whatever you want, it's your car. just don't butcher it beyond repair.

They made, in the 80's, a single headlight/grill conversion and on the right car it doesn't look too bad..like in this link.

Double headlights are a BMW design trait.

Single headlight conversions and roof racks are the design traits of bozos.

                      Also, bumper tuck.
