just bought a silver 92 Vert

    I have owned about a dozen E30s, finally got my first convertible. 92 325i with a 5spd!

    Few questions,

I bought it needing a roof:

-how hard are they to install? Any DIY you can link me to, search couldn't find any

-Are the ebay tops for $300 any good? Recommendations on ones to get or stay away from?

-Top electric motor is out and faulty, this a tough repair or just a matter or swapping in an new electric motor? I know there is two of them right? One for the rear cover.

-did verts ever come with LSD?

I am sure in time I will want to swap the engine but for now want to fix it up pretty much stock and find some nice wheels for it.

Congrats! Hope you make many memories in there. Not sure about those tops, and your electric top issues are probably why most swap to manual.

Yes my auto vert came with lsd rear (373), I would change to manual top, less problems with the top moters...

Lots of potential for sure. You might be able to find someone that has the top assembly to drop in. I have seen some of those eBay top here on r3v and looked pretty good but not at all a fun project. If you know for sure that your motors are shot, then you may be able to just replace the broken one(s), resync, and your done. I went through this process with my MT2 build and it wound up working.

You should sand it down to bare metal and put some terrible looking wheels on it. I hear that's a thing.

                  ;D

Nice looking car. The wheels you have look good. Is the top install video still around? I thought YouTube had a few videos about repair and maintenance of these tops.

If you go ebay, I'd like to know the quality. Sometimes the low price is misleading. The tension straps and some associated parts typically need replaced. The tension straps can be pricey. Consider that into the price. A local upholstery shop here does the top replacement, parts a day labor, around $1000.

                    Just a reference.....
Good looking vert. I just did a full top swap for a top in better shape. Usually cheaper and a lot faster. Keep all the same shims in the same spot and its a direct bolt on done in about an hour. I would go to a manual top, for me its easier and cheaper to maintain.

What does converting it to a manual top involve? Just removing the electric motors I assume?
