The E30 is actually a terrible car to crash in. It was rated pretty poorly in European crash tests.
Hence the fact that even with some pretty bad crashes the cars often get by with surprisingly minimal (not minimal cost) damage. Any energy not absorbed by the car is absorbed by you.

Those ratings are for the birds. I flipped mine doing 90 mph and I walked away with a slighly soreright foot from hitting the brakes. My friend was in with me and he was 100% fine as well.
I would much rather wreck in any BMW, even an Isetta, than a tin can Honda, wehew! :p
