Time to get back on this project.

Next up, wheels.

I have the 14" steelies that will go in for widening on Tuesday. Nothing dramatic, but they will be similar to the 13" set that I have on the green car.

I'll interchange these wheels on whatever cars I'm feeling. I'll probably never sell these.

Yes to the GC's. The car looks awesome. It just needs better wheels.

Already on it. I have a few sets that I am considering.

ireland engineering makes a replacement tii distributor that comes with pertronix style points. quality is good.

I'm not impressed with that unit. I've run it in two of my cars and one was a bad unit. One car did run well with it, though.

I intend to stay with stock since I have a few tii dizzies, and I have a 123 Electronic dizzy as well, which I'll make work on the 1600.

I drove the car around all morning. It runs well, but I'm going to send the distributor out for a rebuild, as well as get a spare kugelfischer pump and all 5 injectors rebuilt. I'll probably even drop the engine just so I can get all new seals on it and make it pretty. I can clean up the engine bay "while I'm in there".

This car is so great. I'm really happy with how it's unfolding, and every time I chip away at it, I find another detail that really makes the car that much better.

After the drive, I headed to a local coffee shop and got a few hours of work in. Then I got bored of work and went back to the shop and washed the tii, then clay bar'd the existing paint of all impurities and hard water spots. Oh boy was this a good idea! The paint came back to life (on the lower sections) and the car started looking about 60x better than the hour before. I managed to snap a few shots before the day's light was gone, and I didn't do much editing, aside from resizing. These are straight from the camera, and into your eyeballs, for your viewing pleasure.







So much to do, so little time. I'm considering GC coilovers for this car as well. Exact same specs as the green car. Because why not.

Wonderful. Mine will be the canyon-carving, daily-driving car. I may throw the 3.91lsd in to get in the powerband a bit quicker.


I drove the car around all morning and the the idle is definitely lopey, but I like it.

Modifying a tii motor is difficult because of the k-fish. It's hard to alter the k-fish to take advantage of a hot cam etc. I'd be tempted to go back to a stock cam and keep as much OEM as possible.
You have a unique car, a tii. They're becoming increasingly rare. My tii likes it above 4K also and is stock. I'd be really shocked if you're getting anything from the cam except a lumpy idle. Tii's are pretty quick out of the box, noticeably quicker than a stock 2002.

While you're right on all counts, this motor runs well, and has noticeably more power than a stock tii. This has been confirmed by a member with a completely rebuilt 73 tii that has won numerous awards at many shows in California, including Pebble Beach weekend and the CCA's Oktoberfest. I gave him a ride today and he mentioned that it's faster than his, and his was rebuild by some of the greatest names in the 2002 game.

I've had heavily built 2002 engines and while the blue car was noticeably quicker than this particular tii, this motor is no slouch. This particular tii motor has compression numbers between 176 psi and 180 psi, which is indicative of >9:1CR.

I'm guessing the kfish pump was also modified, or else it wouldn't run quite right. Either way I will replace all hoses and seals and remove any variables for vacuum leaks.

The car, for as modified as it is, will stay modified. I'll let this car satisfy my tuner side, and the 1600 will be the oem car with virtually no modifications to the drivetrain or suspension.

I don't believe that just because a car is rare or increasing in value, that it should be babied like a trophy. I drive them all, and I prefer to drive them hard.

I'll confirm tomorrow with an engine builder familiar with schrick cams and valve springs and get a confirmation on what valve lash measurements should be.

I did some work to the tii today. It idled fine, but when the engine is cold and you give it gas, sometimes it would choke. I know I have vacuum leaks in the engine bay, but I wanted to first play with the timing, adjust valves, and get new spark plugs in there, since this will create a good baseline for farther tuning.



First, I removed the strut bar. I really like this particular strut bar. So much, that I'm sending it out for powder coating, along with the air box and other things. I didn't get a photo of the strut bar, but I did get photos of the air box. Currently, the airbox is painted with black crinkle coat paint. I want this stripped, and all hardware dipped.



I spent some time cleaning up another valve cover I had. This will do for now, but I intend to pull all aluminum off the motor and have it sent out for tumbling and ceramic clear coat for that perfect aluminum look. This will also allow me to change all seals and gaskets, so it makes sense.




With the valve cover now off, I was able to do some snooping around. I found some goodies under there. From what I was able to see, I verified a Schrick Camshaft and Schrick valve springs. I can't tell which cam is in there, since the important markings are at the end of the cam on the timing chain side. I'm guessing it's a 292 by the way the car idles and my past experiences with the 292.

Someone really put some love into this motor. The PO says the motor was fully rebuilt, but I don't have documentation since the guy responsible is now mad at me and the seller. Apparently he wanted first right to buy back this tii and "keep it in the family" but when the PO offered it to him, he made a ridiculously low offer for both this tii and a nice 325ix. The seller was offended and two years later, it sold to me. The guy who wanted it owns an indy shop in San Diego and refuses to speak to me about the car. Strange dude. I just want to know it's history. Either way, I'm stoked.


I went ahead and checked valve clearances and all rockers had .006 of clearance, which is a bit tight, but makes sense for a high compression, cammed tii motor. I decided not to adjust anything and button her back up, but not before I changed the plugs to new Bosch units, all gapped to .40, as is suggested with tii motors. I figure that with a hot motor like this, .40 gaps will create a hotter spark. With the current 002 dizzy with pertronix, the motor will be happier. When I pulled the old plugs out, they were actually really nice, but were gapped at about .35, and didn't feel the greatest at idle.

With the new plugs and everything buttoned up (but I left the airbox off), I started the car and let it warm up. The idle steadied out and the lumpy cam was very apparent. I decided to take the car out for a quick drive and get gas. I drove the car fairly spirited and confirmed that 1. the cam really kicks in at about 4k rpms and 2. the LSD unit works very well. The car is fun, and has good power. I believe the rumors from the PO. This car really moves.



Pleased with the engine (for now), I went ahead and replaced the driver's side door stop mechanism and tinkered with the center console. I'll make this one really nice with multiple parts I have set aside. I also added euro turn signals but I forgot to get photos.


I started cleaning the engine bay up even more and noticed that this engine has an upgraded starter as well. It's much smaller than the stock unit.



This tii is so great. I'm more and more into it every time I tinker.

I'm glad you're keeping your sense of humor about all this.

When you fly INTO an airport, I think the blame lies on the airport that should have found it BEFORE boarding a plane. Sounds like a rather shitty situation.

But without a gun, what could you have had on your person to turn it into a weapon? A hammer,nail, and workbench clamp? You'd need a person to be strapped to a chair to cause any harm.

I never actually made it past the TSA checkpoint in Long Beach, as I was flying out of there to Portland. So this whole thing happened in Long Beach.

I still cant wrap my head around how such a petty mistake (and it was a complete mistake) can already cost $7500. There isn't much I could have done with a magazine and bullets, since I didn't have the gun itself. But I don't want to chance it and hope that the court sees this how I see this. They are ruthless.

I want to be a lawyer. If I ever am one I'll make sure to give you $7500-$10,000 in free services to make up for it.

These are 14x5.5" 2000cs steel wheels with all trim rings and caps. Excellent score. I'll either have them widened, or the offsets manipulated to give the deeper look. These will have a home on the florida 1600 car.
