(Finally) Joined the E30 club! '90 325i Calypso Cab

    Hey everyone!

I recently picked up this E30 after wanting one for over a decade.

After having my W202 C43 AMG Benz written off, and having had the itch to get a convertible I took the plunge.
Plans are to collector plate it, so basically only period correct mods and then just enjoy it. Interior foam is excellent condition, but the seat covers will need to be replaced. Any recommendations?

Otherwise thanks for having me, and I'm looking forward to finally contributing to this community!

Fellow 91 Calypso vert brother! Welcome!

I don't think I've seen a 91 with diving boards before, but I have a friend who retrofitted some to his late model without too much trouble. I like it! I hope to see loads of updates with your car in the future!

Woops, sorry, it is a 1990.
Do the later spoilers and things like that just bolt right on? Not a huge fan of the diving boards honestly.

To go from early model (diving boards) to late model (body colored plastic bumpers) it requires some fabrication, and I haven't looked into it a whole lot to be honest, but it's been done before.

You may like my bumpers more, but I like your engine more. Mine is only the little M42, but a 4.27LSD helps it feel a little more lively.

How's the roof on it? Mine was shit when I bought my vert, but my father in law helped me put the new fabric on.

Nice cabby! Roof is excellent, my car is a one owner car and they kept up on it. Roof is a few years old and like brand new, and it's the more expensive German one allegedly.

Good to hear, it must be the twillfast material. That's what I chose to replace to old ragged roof when I got the new one. So far it's holding up real well.

So what all do you think you'll be doing to yours? Does it need a lot of restoration? My seats could use new leather for sure

Welcome to the Calypso Vert club!

Mine is a 1990 as well. Front bumpers just bolt on with a new metal valance and bumper shocks. Back bumpers just bolt on with new shocks as well, but you need to add two new bolts to the bumpers and run them through the existing holes on the sides of your car.
Look here for exactly how to do that:

Problem is, you don't have the lower valance in the back but there are guys on here that run plastic rear bumbers with no added valance. I went M-Tech 2 on mine and the bumper and valance are one piece. But with all that said, I rocked diving boards for about three years and they protected the car from two small hits that otherwise would have been bad; so they do work.
Thank god, R3V was getting boring since the ginger kid wrecked his car. - Stonea

It is the twillfast, yes. Seems high quality. I'll be basically doing a full cut polish and interior detail, and will need to replace the leather skins. Some minor scratches on the body to touch up by hand, and one bumperette has a scrape that needs to be repaired. I might do a body kit, period correct, but not likely. Most likely I'll be swapping the 14" weaves for a set of simple five spoke 15x7 ronals (date stamped 1990) and recharging the AC. I have a hardtop, but won't be driving this in winter and don't want to store it so I want it to go.

True. It's low on the priority list for now, and I don't mind the diving boards. I'll be happy with an iS airdam I think.
Thanks for the link and information, I was finding that unusually difficult to find clear info on for some reason. Are my bumpers early or late? Or is the rear early style because of the wheel lips and late style in the front like a comparable '90 sedan? Etc. so that clears it up, cheers!

Don't you have to trim the bumper to fit the higher early model rear arches? Or are verts different?

Verts are different, they all share the same arches as the late models, so it's a straight swap. There is a slight variance of the angle at the edge, but you have to be looking for it to notice.

Nice pics! My wife's had the hardtop and it was great. Crazy how much it quiets the car and reduces the cowl shake etc.

Mine came with an IS airdam and it makes a huge difference. It totally makes the front bumper look more like it belongs.
