Hi everyone..
I haven't posted much here, but I have been following most of your projects and there is a lot to be admired. Thanks for the inspiration, tips and DIY's.
My car is a 1987 320i two door. It had two previous owners before me (father & son) with a documented mileage of 116.000 km's. Clean Fairfax report and never been in a crash. The car led a very normal life and nothing other than maintenance have been done to it! Unmolested in every aspect :-)
A little over a year ago I started the restoration / modification and my goal was to get it to a 100% clean and perfect state. Original but modified, just like you could have done when it was new.
Things like Shadowline, sport suspension, M-Tech parts etc.
While it will remain stock engine wise, I have some plans here too. Headers, 325i stock exhaust, strut bar, painted valve cover and intake manifold along with a general clean-up.
Body have been repaired for what little corrsion there was and had a full respray in the original color. It needed two new front wings, front plate and patches in both foot wells. The sills were sanded down and there was no rust found. The gas tank breathing pipe were replaced and a 3x4 cm hole were found. This was discovered after the repaint, and since it's of no importance structure wise it was grinded down, treated with rust killer and fibre patched up the hole. The whole undercarriage was also inspected and although there was surface rust there was no holes. It was then treated with thin Mercasol antirust oil-
A full shadowline conversion with painted bumpers, black window lock lists, black chrome trim and painted mirror covers was done. A new wind shield was needed to finish of the exterior.
The interior was a dull standard blue and it was replaced with a mix of two sports interiors. Everything black except for the leather/vinyl on the front and rear seats. The drivers seat used had a replacement of lower and upper side pieces along with fresh foam where needed. The tabs for the back pieces were welded and the guides refurbished. M-tech steering wheel 385mm to compliment. I have the M-Tech gear lever lying here, just not replaced it yet. Carpet is sprayed black with textile spray. New OE mats. New lower dash console and new handbrake console.
Suspension I chose the Bilsten B12 kit with bespoke Eibach's. I wanted a look and rideheight similar to the period correct Hartge, Schnitzer and Alpina cars. For me driveability is key and I don't fancy slammed and bouncy rides (I had that when I was younger and while I still like the looks, I do not like the ride :)). Bushings, arb bushes and some other bit n bobs were replacd too.
While there is still A LOT to be done before I would say it's finished and eventually put it up for sale (probably next spring/summer) I enjoy it everyday now. It drives fantastic for what it is, and I almost can't wait until next off season to finish the rest..
So here it is...
(don't know what happened to the pictures...? Until I figure out what to do for more pictures... there is lots on my Instagram: bmw_e30_restomod
