You also missed my entire point of this thread. E30s had problems later on in life.....the E46 didn't. They started at 30K. They attest to their own build quailty.

How do we know that E30's were trouble-free when new, since the newest ones are over 15 years old? Who here bought their E30 new, kept all the records, and can remember what happened 15 or more years ago?

Since you work at a shop, I think your view is a bit biased. You ONLY see the cars that have problems. Since the E46 is very common, you see lots of E46 problems. The E30 is relatively rare, so you don't see many problems. The thing that you don't see are the hundreds of thousands of E46s driving around with few or no problems. Same on E46 fanatics. Most of the members there are apoiled kids under 25 who mod their cars, then beat the crap out of them, then complain when something breaks.

You see lots of complaints because people in general are quick to complain. People rarely give praise when something works as expected.

I've owned American cars my whole life, until two years ago. These vehicles ranged from the 1970's to 2000's. The E46 was the first German car I've owned. It has FAR exceeded my expectations in terms of performance, comfort, economy, build quality, and reliability. In addition, it is an order of magnitude better than any of the American cars I've ever owned in my entire life, in all the categories listed above.

Before whining about the new BMWs, I suggest checking out some of the other vehicles on the market, now and in the past, to gain a more balanced perspective. You'll find that a large percentage of cars are crap, and the Germans are consistantly at the top.

i personally dont give a shit about any BMW anymore. my next car will be s2000 or STi.

I honestly don't see how you can say that. My e46 has the sport luxury package, and it is extremely nice inside. A 318 e36 looks cheap, but a freaking sport/lux e46, not at all. I still love my fanboy e30, but I like some e36/e46s as well.

I can say that because it's my opinion, and it's the impression I got while driving them. You are free to like your car as much as you please, that doesn't mean I have to agree with you.

I don't buy that at all. You cannot honestly believe that the build quality on newer BMW's like E36's and E46's is as good as it was back in the 80's, on cars like E30's and E34's.

Hey trent, should i pull out the records on my 88 325is to see how much the PO spent in maintenance since it was new? it would take a good hour to go through them and prove you wrong, but i don't think you are important enough for me to care.

Those are pics from when I picked it up. The guy probably used some interior shine crap. I am going to condition them to give them the soft clean look.

Don't get me wrong, i love e30s, they are great little cars, but for a DD i'll take an e46 hands down.

trents pretty right on with that list. seemed like i worked on nothing but e46's and x3's at the dealership this summer, i can do a window regulator with my eyes closed, haha. i love e46's personally though, i'd love to own a 4 door ZHP daily driver.

...Similar to VAG, they've coated what seems like every panel with a dull looking finish, for a nice cozy look. Well, unlike most interior parts that wear and get shiny over time...The coating just peels off.

I think this can be said about a lot new cars nowadays. They're very enjoyable when they are young/new, but they don't age half as well as some of the older machines.
