    new to the e30

I just bought an 89 325i auto for $400 on Craig's List last week, and then yesterday found an 87 325i manual for $250. Both needed a bit of work, the 89 needed a new muffler and the 87 needs a new ECU and some electrical. I had a bunch of questions, but I didn't need to ask any at all. I used the search feature a dozen times and got all my questions answered. So thanks.

I'm going to use the 89 as a parts car for the 87 because the 89 has pretty bad rust, and I love driving a standard. This is going to be a daily driver. I'm not out to race or make a show car, but that doesn't mean I'm not going to give it a paint job, a bumper tuck and clean it up a bit. It's a bimmer, and I intend to treat it as such. And I can afford to put money into it because I got it so cheap. God bless Craig and his List.

    Oh yes, pictures.

damn, both of those look pretty straight. good job.

although, I don't know about using the 89 for parts. I have no idea of the rust extent, but lots of people like to get rid of those diving board bumpers and I don't know if they're a direct bolt-on to the 87 (I think not off the top of my head, but verts are different than all the rest).

hmm, both colors are nice...you've got room in your driveway for both...keep both ;)

see, I'm confused, some people say that the plastics are not a bolt on and that it's really intense and I need to be a god at body work. If the plastics from the 89 are a direct bolt on, then I'll consider it, but as far as I've been told, they aren't.

besides, I believe someone on this forum once said, "Diving boards build character."

Sounds like what a parent says to their kid with deformaties.

Eurospeed did a write up on it..."Project Facelift", it's not too intense to do.

Sometime in the future, I'm going to finally throw my plastics on and then I'll have no need for the shocks under my vert's metal bumpers. They are shorter than stock, like the length of a post-tucked non-vert bumper.

Or, on the bright side, you can fit euro metal bumpers :)

You don't have to be a body work god but you'll have to know the basics. There are probably plenty of peeps in your area that would be willing to help you. Jump on in if you like the look and are going to keep the car. This is an e30 and your gonna have to learn to fix it sooner or later. As far as getting the car cheap and being able to afford to fix it up....You'll soon realize that it gets addicting and expensive before...well....you realize it.

In my opinion diving boards are the character of the car. Why change it? It's like putting fake tits on a girl. She looks like she has big tits but in reality if you look close enough she's just a flat chested girl with fake tits. That being said my personal taste is for plastic bumpered cars, I just think they look cooler. Every now and then I see a car with diving boards that I think looks awesome and if this is your style than go for it. but if I was into plastic bumpered cars then buy one instead of butchering up something to try and make it what it's not. The only reason I could see to do this Mod is because your a fan of the older arches and love the plastics. the bottom line is it doen't matter what I think because opinions are like assholes, I don't want to be an asshole. Do what you want to your car, it's yours. If it's not a collectible car I think it's kinda cool to mod it and make it your own interpretation, but when you do don't go out there ripping on that guy who "Fuh Razes" or "rices" his ride because what your doing to yours isn't really that much different.

I agree...but that comes down to personal taste.

Oh and Stickman....I dig your style! You seem like a cool cat.

                        well said sir.

                        and thanks for the compliment.

I really like the plastic bumpers, but if I was really that into them, then I would just buy a newer style car. I'm just happy I have a bmw at this point. "Euro" or US, Plastic or diving board, doesn't change the fact that I have more fun out on the road than most of the people I pass.

my friends and i love having metal bumpers, due to the simple fact that we can hit shopping carts in parking lots (a few times they have rolled into unsuspecting parked vehicles). lol. may seem immature but you can get those bitches going about 30 miles an hour and let them slam into a curb and watch them do a few flips. i would keep them.
