It's Toyota's attempt at retro. They're trying to make at latter day FJ40 Landcruiser which was sort of the icon for Toyota 4x4s, sort of like the 2002 was the first BMW to have for the enthusiast.
The white top is one of the retro styling cues, does it work, sort of. I personally don't care for it so much but it could be worse.
I bought the vehicle because it fits my needs for a weekend warrior quite well, do I love the styling, no. It has grown on me though.

And they fucking FAILED MISERABLY. If they had made it about 2-3 feet shorter in the middle and not gone for that SUV-length body, they might have pulled it off.

My dad had an FJ40 when I was a kid, and I thought it was the coolest thing ever. This new one is an abomination.

Do you realize how useless a vehicle 2-3 feet shorter in the middle would be... park an old FJ next to a new one, it's not THAT much longer. Sorry it doesn't fit your standards for ideal, it's definitely not everyone's cup of tea, but it's far from a failure in terms of being a useful vehicle and it's been selling well.

i had (shouldnt have sold them) a '68 and a '72 Fj40 w/small block swaps...imo the new FJ is an abortion. they'll probably end up being fad vehicles like the PT cruiser. nice e30 tho:up:
