You can make them handle half assed ok, but certainly not like a well setup RWD car. There's a reason the SCCA banned the AWD cars that Archer Bros. racing ran in the early 90s. They whipped up on everything in their class. I forget now, because I no longer care, what class but when setup properly a DSM is a formidable platform.

I'm pretty burnt out on them for a number of reasons, but even then it's still fun to drag this piece of shit out every now and again.

DSMs are totally reliable if they've been taken care of and things are working properly. If your car is frying ECU's I'd look REALLY closely at your charging system. People that own them and complain about reliability don't take care of the car or maintain it. "Oh lets throw a huge stage eleventeen turbo on my car that needs tons of other work and then call it a piece of shit because everything else breaks"

i totally agree-the 1st generation dsm cars are reliable,i've owned 5 of them ranging from 90-94 cars tsi awd cars, the only real issue is with the tranny but, with every car there is always one..... like the m20,just keep up w/ oil changes, scheduled timing belt replacements and they would last for a long time-my friend still drives my very first talon(91 fwd turbo) until now with 285k miles(original motor),tranny was replaced at 200k due to syncroes...
i'm still debating on getting another one for winter purposes as oppose to an ix but,i guess if either one shows up as a good deal/good condition,i would snatch either one.
the 4g63 motor was supplied by mitsubishi corp to hyundai corp since they where more reliable than what hyundai actually made-so i guess that shows how "good" they are.....

original poster: very nice car, good work(600 hp all wheel drive -yeah baby!!!)

4g63 ftw. My buddy has a 1st gen eagle. Wicked car. Blew an engine, he rebuilt it, now there is some oil pressure problem. We have to drill out some housing for the oil passages. Don't ask me what. He showed me some magazine (maybe sport compact) where they had a recipe for a 300$ upgrade investment for 300hp on those engines. Not the most reliable car in the world, and lots of spaghetti in the engine compartment, but cheap awd, and fast = yumm.

I used to have one. It always had stupid little issues. 16g turbo AWD. It was fun when it was working right.

Then one night I was rallying that shit in a grassy field and found a culvert that was hidden by some tall grass.:(

A Talon with a Hyundai engine. yipee. Impressive, even if useless overkill, power though!

I see you edited this from fwd to awd(heavy). In my experience, even though build quality is so-so, they have a lot of aftermarket support, and are cheap to make scary fast.
