I did the course, best way to go in my opinion, you learn a lot in a controlled setting. Any numbnut with a little coordination can roar down the interstate in a new 600cc sportbike. It takes a real man to go around cones on some 125cc put-put while having instructors yell at you "counter-steer" "lean" "slower" "faster" "look through the turn".
I took my course over a weekend that was pouring rain. It sucked. The braking tests were interesting. After 10 minutes of repetition, telling us if the rear wheel begins a skid, keep on the brake and pray for the best or a lowside at the worst--- whatever you do don't let go of that rear brake once you start skidding, or you will see the air before the pavement as that rearwheel regains traction and throws you. They really described this at least twice before the final test in vivid detail.
What happens? A chick in the class high-sides at 20mph wearing a half-face helmet, chin hit pavement, ambulance, blood, crying..... Then it was my turn. I was next in line. Quite the weekend, actually taught me a healthy fear of the pavement.
My buddy is buying one of these in a few weeks, he's buying it to take down back roads and use as a commuter. He has no experience but knows all the things you guys are talking of, I just hope he doesn't get screwed ...
please be careful, and w/e money you might be planning to use on your car, no sir, you buy yourself some good gear with that cash!
I started riding at a very young age, and I can tell ya man, nothing is as relxing as taking off on a cool night with the stars overhead and just riding for an hour ^_^
Damn, good deal.... although I believe I got a good deal on mine... considering these bikes retain their value at $2000+ for years. Here in SFL people try to sell their 06s for over the MSRP!! Anyhow... I should be getting some gear next week. I just bought a new front tire because there was a flat spot causing some vibrations at higher speeds (50mph).

You did get a good deal as far as I see it.
Just something cool some of you might appreciate (dont mean to jack your thread here, rwdrift :?)
but my dad has an '87 Honda CBR1000 Hurricane with under 8k miles on it, and its MINT. Looks brand new.
Its an amazing bike.
My boss is in love with touring bikes, he has a BMW R1100 RT which he is selling since he bought a R 1200 GS, he swears by BMW Enduro bikes, loves the stuff:
My boss on the left in Italy. His is the yellow one, and the red one is the R 1200 GS. He has a blue R 1200 GS here in the States.
I scanned these for him, its amazing, I almost bought an Aprilia because of these!
Forget the name of the bike he wanted me to get, but I passed anyways.
well, 20k is alot of miles for a bike. not a TON, but quite a few.
