    Our Poor E28 528e

Well Today I rolled our 86 528e out of the garage. My mom's Lincoln Blew the headgasket so I'll be replacing it and need the garage so I can work out of the heat.
The car was purchased by my mom for me to drive to Highschool we got the car for $3000(way to much for it) It was our first BMW so I didn't know how much they were worth. The car ran great for a bit but just went down hill three different BMW mechanics could not figure it out. Finally the car lost all power I ran a compression check and it blew the headgasket, after replacing the gasket it wouldn't start. That was cuased by the pick up pin on the flywheel being sheared off. So After Pulling off the Auto tranny and replacing the flywheel the car still won't start. You name it and it has most likely been replaced, cylinder head, fuel injectors, fuel pump, ecu, engine harness etc... It's been a pure money pit and it's been sitting in the garage not wanting to start for the over a year now. Over all the car is in OK shape it was bronizt and was repainted very crappily Red. The car at some point in time was in a major wreck as all the body panels are not lined up right, there spots of bondo here and there and the whole driver's side is Bannana shaped. Oh well I guese the car will now sit in our driveway untill the day I can get it to start

I don't know if I'd consider it a good engine or not as it won't start. I'm almost positive it's electrical related. Everything from the Headgasket up is not orginal and was either new or pulled off my 84 325e parts car. He had the head cleaned, and planed, and partialy rebuilt. Supposedly the PO said the engine was rebuilt and hadd 120k on it. When I pulled the head the bores were good and clean and it had 155 psi compression on the cylidners where the gasket wasn't blown. Another thing is the chassis has over 300k on it.

Since you're collecting old 5 series that won't start or run, want to take mine too? Just kidding. I've got the same thing with my 528e but it starts - just isn't driveable due to the timing pin being off sufficiently enough to cause problems. Good luck with it.
Driving is the only way to go faster....

it was six last summer when I had my 84 318i but it's gone now.
We would sell the 5er but My mom is hoping for the day it will run again, plus it was the only one of our bmw's that had working AC.

you know, ive never seen an e28 in red.. did they even make one in that color? Ours is burgandy, and its had its fair share of problems. I just convinced my dad that our 4 year idle problem was due to the tps and the trottle not closing completely (sticking), and now the car runs pretty good. But eta automatic 4 doors have to the worst cars for everything. Just the other day I was trying to merge on the highway with the ac on, and i had to drop into 2nd with pedel on the post and it still wouldnt flow with traffic after i got it on the onramp, was taching about 4500 until i shifted into 3rd, which we all know for an eta is nearly screamin' lol... Its a good car though, and cruises very nice, they ride nice and get decent milage.

You should get that thing going someday, make it a long-trip car. It would be unique in red, so perhaps if the paints not too far along it will buff out.

It was a nice Long trip car when it ran. I drove it from TN to Michigan and back two times cruising at 80-90 the whole way with no problems. I want to get it running but everything I try does not help one bit. I've seen one or two other E28 in red but am not sure if it was factory or not. The paint is in good shape on the sides the roof and hood are faded but a good waxing should restore it the main problem is chips in the paint as there are 3-4 places where the paint has chipped off down to the primer.
