So I finally got around to installing the custom center vent gauge pod I got from Striker on s14.net i believe he's a member here too, and I know he's on bimmerforums, but I figured some of you track guys might be interested in this.
Striker made a batch of these custom pods, and they work great. They locate the gauges in a very visible location without mounting stuff up ontop of your dash our out of view down by the ash tray. The angle points them directly towards your head. I've also installed an oil pressure warning light. I bought a small and large LED light and found that the smaller one was actually brighter (simply because it was closer to the lense). So even though it may look small it really gets your attention.
I installed autometer full sweep electric gauges for oil pressure, oil temp and water temp. along with a voltage meter until I replace it with a fuel pressure gauge or possible AFR (although I don't really need to see that unless I'm tuning).
here are some pics of the setup. Ignore the nasty cracks in the dashboard as I have another one at my work that I'll get around to installing that is crack free. I could easily have installed black screws but i was in a hurry as I put this setup in this past weekend, and I'm going to Infineon for a two day event this coming weekend.

Striker should have more of these pods, you can find more info in my original thread on s14.net I started about 8 months ago. he posts in the middle of the second page
