This particular situation isnt what you would use the HDR technique for.. Here is a great link, how-to-create-high-dynamic-range-images. As you can see HDR technique is used when your framed image requires multiple exposures to get the sky and shady foreground right. In the situation of your shoot, night time with some sources of light, correctly placed car and long enough exposures would have worked fine. Next time, try putting the camera in Av mode (aperture priority) and put it at say f8.0 (ISO at 100 or 200) set up on a tripod. You camera should be able to correctly meter the light and take a long enough exposure. If its coming out too bright or dark, use the exposure compensation (+/-) to fine tune it.
