I test drove a local E30 318i Cabrio last year that was kind of like what you described. Good shape, not amazing. The seller thought it was nicer than it really was. She wouldn't budge much on the price. The one redeeming factor of the car was a set of 16" 4x100 BBS RS 003s. It still wasn't enough to get me to pay her asking price.Leave a comment:

Nice score. I wouldn't mind a stockish 318.
Few years ago I looked into a silver 4 door 318i. Was in good (not amazing) shape but they wanted 4.5k. I said, something like it's not worth that much. They said, well we're firm, so go get more money. I laughed and said it simply isn't a desirable car and they'll have it for awhile. Needless to say that car sat on their corner for quite some time.Leave a comment:

I don't think the non-airbag cars have the compression nut, but I'm not certain. I've never had to mess around with the column in my 89.Leave a comment:

Do you happen to know if that loose steering column nut is only on airbag cars? I read that somewhere, but my iX has a clunk too, and it's an '88.Those comfort seats are bulletproof as long as you don't weigh much!
I had a steering column clunk that turned out to be exactly what you suspect on your own car--a loose compression nut at the base of the steering column. I also found that the control arm outer balljoints were shot.Leave a comment:

Are you sure it has 266,000 miles? That interior sure doesn't look like it. Nice find, Ben!
I woulda jeweed them down more for that mileage! I want a 318is...I think I'll steal my dad's.Leave a comment:

You remind me of me more and more. I bet you already have a spreadsheet started on this car too. :up:Muwahahahaha.
I just ran out of gas in it. Previous owner forgot to tell me that the fuel reserve light is burned out!
Managed to coast to the gas station and fill up. So, the list currently reads:
- Replace RF sidemarker bulb.
- Replace fuel reserve lamp.
- Replace main cluster lamp, left side (speedometer, fuel gauge).
- Diagnose SRS system (SRS lamp on check panel flashes for 5 minutes, then goes solid).
- Replace rear center bumper trim. Repaint all other bumper/door trims (SEM Trim Black).
- Replace defrost switch.
- Replace OBC backlight.
- Replace HVAC control bulbs.
- Re-paint front valance (PPG Delstar acrylic enamel, foam roller).
- Re-paint side rockers & rear lower valance (SEM Chip Guard).
- Replace shift knob & boot.
- Replace shift mechanism (shorter shift lever?).
- Replace hubcaps (possibly?).
- Diagnose steering clunk (nut at steering column base?).
- Remove front & rear side window tint (rear already removed).
This of course is in addition to a full detailing which will be completed while the trim is off the car for repainting. The engine bay needs a serious detailing...luckily I've got a half gallon or so of Griot's Engine Cleaner left. I imagine I'll be going through most of it on this car.Leave a comment:
