So we pull into this little pub-ish type thing and ask the owner for a knife to cut the airbag off. She won't give us one because she is afraid we'll cut ourselves and sue her.

yeah considering the airbag is deployed with a small explosive device, it can damage your hearing. if it doesnt go away after a few days hit up the doctor, then claim it on your comprehensive.
