Mostly for looks. Putting the slats on top would make the overall look higher. Also when the slats are on the underside when light stuff is placed on the top the metal crossbars can hold them in better. I would never actually put something heavier than a snowboard up there. Maybe a 30 rack of Busch Light (which has been done).

Here's a terrible cell phone picture of mine (Thule) on the 318, it'll be getting moved over to the sedan once that car is presentable...haha
Side note: 2 bikes, 2 people, and a car full of luggage in the hills of southern NY/PA is brutal in an M10 powered car haha. Made it to Wilmington, NC and back no problem though. :)::: Present -- '87 325e, '95 525i

I love the roof racks, I just wish i could justify owning one. I have a nice bianchi but Every one i know knows im far to lazy to ride a bike. How many of you actualy ride the bikes on your racks? Or is it all looks.Girls, you can't be the first, but you can be next

got a roof rack earlier in the season. so far its helped me carry bikes, large crated packages, wheels, a futon, etc.. very useful.
its a yakima setup with the older thule fairing. the fairing was cut down to match the e30 exactly, and i was gonna do the bars as well, but i wanted them to fit my gf's car as well. i have an extra fairing like the one pictured (except it has stickers) if anyone wants it.
