I bought some rubber strips and use them between the racks and the car. No scratches.

so I have this plan to get a THULE faring for my rack...but I want to ninja mod the lettering:

          Normal: THULE
          Myway: TBOLT

thoughts on how I should do this? I would like to keep the T and the L and just change h, u, and e. I want it so that you think it just says thule unless you read it.

Strip the whole thing get one graphic and lay it out that way. The easiest way in my opinion.

So when you guys get on craigslist and search for Thule racks, are they all the same? Is there a certain attachment type for each one? I searched on craigslist and found a bunch but it doesn't really say anything about car specifics. How do I know it will fit and how do they clamp on?

P.S. - I'm a newb and hopefully bringing home an E30 this weekend.

^^ Very nice! Needs slightly larger adapters. :p

So are the wood slats just bolted to the underside through the cross bars?

Yeah I need bigger adapters in the front. I could go just a tad larger in the back but I wanna stretch more and drop it another 1/4"

Yeah the wood slats are just bolted to the undersides of some solid aluminum bars.

Not sure if you're going for looks, utility, or both, but the rack would be able to support much more weight if you put the wood on the top of the bars. All the weight that you put on the slats (if you put stuff on it) is being held by the screws themselves vs. the stronger aluminum bars.

I don't know if you're going for functionality, but thought I'd give my $.02 incase you were unaware. Looks cool regardless though! :)

Not only functionality, but I think it would look 10x better with the slats on top. Looks sweet either way, though.
