WHATEVER YOU DO. DO NOT use the metal cast smoke, it does not come out very well unless you use ALOT of coats, and generally its to dark and hazy after that. I tried to do the clears on my E36 with it since the red on my E30 tails cam out so well. I was VERY dissapointed.E30_Groupie. As someone who has a lot of experience with this, I want to ask, shouldn't a matte finish reduce the transparency of the light more than a gloss finish(like fog on a window)? Even if you put clear over it, you're not getting any actual transparency back, just making the outside layer shiny, no?
Most of the lights I've seen with matte/clear have a "hazy gloss" and that's not what I'm looking for. I want a look that would be similar to applying vinyl tint over the light, and for that I'm thinking a gloss finish paint would be better. I'm going to try Smoke Metalcast and see how it turns out.
Any opinions?
I find when using clear that one mist coat followed immediately by a wet coat usually works best. My favorite clear is Krylon Crystal Clear acrylic. I've never had a lifting problem if I let the base coat flash before spraying it.
Sometimes I even spray it when the basecoat is still wet, usually I get a smoother finish that way.
Although at this point I'm moving away from spray cans, although I personally feel like a pro and can get very nice finsihes out of them, I really want to using two part clears for better durability, and the only one that comes in a spray can is $50 a can. :(
I just bought a small Air compressor and after using my friends set up am going to pick up my own spray gun soon.

How long does it take to remove the ///M badge? You've had this car for quite a while and in every thread you post you say "it'll come off, I just haven't gotten around to it yet."
It takes 5 minutes total, probably a tenth of the time you spent waiting for the paint to dry on your tail lights.Comment

And i have a feeling that it'll look pretty shitty once i get it off.
