Hello to all, what a great forum...Questions about my E30

Just found this place last week and finally feel at home ;P I'm on my second bimmer, Early 86 325ES.... my last one was the same car from the late months. This is the first one I've decided to mod at all. Love these forums and seeing what people do to these lovely little versatile cars. I'll never sell mine. Not much of a car guy, beyond hoses and brake pads and oil changes, but I'm willing to learn, much of my planned work I will probably take to a friends auto shop.

Found a Dinan chip for 58 dollars on Ebay, bought it, scared to put it in myself. Stories of having to adjust the idle and mixture to rock it right have put me on my guard. There is an experienced shop in Santa Rosa ( a couple hundred miles but probably the closest shops I would trust my little bimmer with)... Plan to have it installed down there.

Ordered a K&N Cone filter, in the mail. Can't wait to rip that monstrous airbox off the engine and let it breath. I spend about 1/3 of my cars time bouncing around on dirt roads... any problems with these as compared to stock in heavier than normal dust applications....

Suspension, as I said above, I spend a 1/3 of my time bouncing around on dirt roads. My first 325 I killed by ripping the oil pan and exhaust off on a protruding rock that was just a bit too high. Obviously, I can't afford to lose an inch of ground clearance, and would even prefer finding a set of springs that would gain me an inch. I'm considering Bilstein heavy dutys, but I fear they will be too stiff for the dirt, so I'm considering boge low pressures, but I'm afraid they won't be stiff enough for screaming corners on the paved. So far I can't find any springs that won't drop my ride height, so I'm pondering leaving the stock springs in, but worry that the stiffer suspension will overly dampen them and reduce my ride quality... any advice on balancing this issue? I saw the airbags in the e30 pickup forum and have been toying with the idea as I could get ideal ride heighths on both concrete and dirt, not sure they can be installed on the front too? Would aribags make my ride a total failure? I know my application is a little weird. Anyone who knows anything about rally/dirt/hybrid suspensions for my ride, I would be thrilled to hear about it. I imagine someone's made a go at it with an 325iX at least but I've heard the suspensions are different on the ES and that. Fairly certain I can't afford coilovers at this point.

Getting a 3.25 LSD out of a 533 I think, anyway, it'll fit my ride, but I want to stiffen up the slip percentage a bit, Having seen diagrams of how these work and knowing it for myself are two different things... I'm looking for advice based on experience here. I can get a shop to do this for about 100 bucks I hear? Help!

Wheels and tires. I'd like to go up a rim size, but a moderate one, as the dirt and rocks and bouncing would eat low profile tires and ding and ruin fancy rims. I'd like to go slightly taller than factory recommendation on the tire, to try and eek an extra half inch of ground clearance. and sneak a little wider tire in there. Anyone with experience in this area I'd love some advice. I've been told by my friend who builds drift cars (after telling him that I didn't want a drift spec) that 16 by 9 in rims will fit snugly but not be too big. They sound huge though, and I'm having trouble visualizing. I'd like to go a little wider on the tires but not so wide that I can't continue to bounce down the road in the mud and snow (a lot of fun on dirt let me tell you) I was looking at some 15 by 7.5 rims that looked a good mid size, and had some good middle-of-the-road-but-wider-than-stock options. Any opinions on this would be welcome.

Exhaust. Every year or so I rattle or rip apart an exhaust, and the stock one is more expensive than a lot of the aftermarket ones I've seen. I want my exhaust to perform up to par with the intake and the rest of the system, but it's either got to be cheap (ansa looks viable to me) or built like a damn tank... (super sport?) either way I'll probably rip it to shit. Like to just rip it back to the catalytic and stick in a straight free flow muffler under the back seat, as I'll never sell this ride, but I'm nervous about that too.... Any advice in this area would be lovely.

HID headlights, my eyes suck, I drive a lot, often at night, gotta have them... can't find a kit)

I'll not bother you with the dream projects I can't afford. (325i top end when this engine finally fizzes etc) but I have a couple more things I'd love decent opinions on...

Short shift kit for a daily driver, which one is best... I'm looking at the Bavauto kits...

Gearing in the Steering... project fascinated me from the moment I read about it. You can change the gearing ratio in the steering system? Is this true? I would LOVE to have tighter steering. Any more turning of the wheel than necessary seems wasted to me, and I love responsive steering.... but I don't want it so racing tight that I can't drive with my knee while rolling a cigarette.... anyone know what ratios will fit in my car and give me both these feelings?

Skid plate... see one from 666 industries, but it's got their logo all over it... anyone else manufacture one.

Ok, to review, and thank you to any of you who actually read this far. I drive my 325es every day... live in rough terrain, there's 3000 feet of elevation change and 25 miles of road between my house and the nearest gas station or grocery store. and the last 5 is poorly maintained gravel and dirt skid roads and such. I also love to go down to the bay at 70 miles an hour and be comfy on the highway, I love to rock down the 1 with my tires squealing on each corner, I need 1 car that does all these fairly well....

I'm looking for advice on best shock/spring combos... somehow to lift my ride height a bit, possibly airbags. I'm stepping up to the 3.25 cuz it's the best diff for my purpose, I want to stick with an lsd but want to toughen in up and need advice on that, I know shit all about wheels and tires, just that mine are stock and fairly wimpy, and the crazy looking low pros ya'll use aren't going to cut it on the dirt. My cone filter good enough or not, should I build it a turbulence shield, is there another option? Exhaust... need something built to last, tucked up at least as neatly as the stock one, and I'd like to get a small bump in torque/hp out of it...

thanks for your consideration and keep playing....

    Nathan

        Leave the stock airbox on.
Talk to Erik (RWDrift) at KO performance @ the SSK.
Go on the group buys threads and search around. there is plenty of money to be saved if you buy and install with a purpose.
Make a list by importance/need, and do not stray unless you get a deal you cannot pass up. Make sure to do everything in stages, such as all the suspension and bushings at once. Exhaust, drive shaft components, diff and SSK at the same time, ETC...
        GL!

Welcome to r3v. Might I suggest a little more time acquainting yourself with the Search function? 90% of the questions in your post can be answered just by searching.

Edited: So you want a modded E30 chassis that can attack corners and handle 5 miles of dirt road twice every day? Sounds like you need 2 cars.

              Whoa. Ok.

Chip. You don't need to go to a shop to install it. Chips in these cars are typically plug and play. If you know where the ECU is, it's a straightforward process. Just disconnect battery, drop ECU, open, pull out the old chip, stick the new one in, close up, reconnect battery, start.

Air Filter. There was a comparison somewhere that showed that the stock filter was more than effective, and did not significantly hamper air flow. I've always been worried by K&N filters, because they seem so flimsy and holy when held up to a light.

Suspension. For dirt roads, you can't afford to lower the car at all. Unfortunately, you can't have the suspension cake and eat it too - if you want the car to corner properly on pavement, you need a lower center of gravity and less body roll, which is unobtainable without shorter springs and stiffer shocks. I'd say your best bet here is stock springs and some sort of stiff shock. The iX has a different suspension geometry than all the other e30's, but this is an effect of it having 2 more diffs and requiring front carriers that won't bind the axles during suspension travel.

I'm not sure about the slip percentage adjustment on LSD's.. I always thought it was fixed?

Wheels. 9 inches is a bit wide, but I think it will fit properly if you're not dropping the car. You can run up to 245's on 9" wheels, but your e30 will look like a truck :P

Exhaust. Grab some old catback sections from a junkyard, or get dual welded 1.75" straight pipes. The smaller the pipe diameter, the more durable the pipe, so duals will be stronger (and offer more ground clearance) than a big single pipe.

SSK. There is a thread somewhere here about shifters from other BMWs that you can use to achieve an SSK effect. They fit in the stock carrier and are pretty cheap.

Steering racks. The stock e30 rack is 4 turn lock-to-lock, which is super slow. You can get an e30 M3 rack (3.5 turn, no modification needed to fit), as well as an e36 M3 rack, which I believe is 3.25 turn, but needs some modification of the steering linkage to fit. There is a thread here with more detail about the swap, it's a pretty common thing.

Skid Plate. User Ejnight on here makes stainless steel skid plates which look beefy as hell. Search is your friend.

I'm.. going to get back to listening in class. Good luck with your project, it's atypical, and sounds like it will kick ass! I've always had a soft spot for rally e30's.

WOW Thank you Kronus... I was thinking stock springs with heavy duty bilsteins and I think you've decided it for me... I'd read the SSK forums but couldn't seem to pick out a decided winner. Sweet advice on the skid plate, I'll take it. The m3 rack sounds perfect... The dual exhaust tip I never would have thought of and havn't seen in any forums discussing my specific exhaust problems. I'm also wondering, has anyone driven thicker sway bars on washboards/potholes/dirt and how much discomfort do they add? I know it's a sum of the bars springs and shocks but I'm wondering if anyone has any breadth of experience on this topic... I was worried that 9 inches seemed awful wide, I'm going to wait on wheels and tires till after the suspension is done... I've also cancelled my tentative order for the cone filter assembly till I can do more research... I really appreciate the time you put into itemizing my post. I don't know a damn thing about LSDs other than what I've read in the forum posts, but I'm sure I read about percentage of torque needed to make slippage happen and that they can be adjusted during a rebuild....

And to vacman, thanks for the suggestion... when I said "just found" I mean I've been reading the forums for 2 or 3 weeks without posting. While I realize that a lot of this stuff has been discussed in many posts, most of those discussions being my prompt for asking these questions, I felt that each one of my questions could stand alone here in that.... a) there are VEERY few rally e30s on here, in most of my questions, you will see a qualifier such as "for my application what is best".
                  b) a lot of the appropriateness or lack thereof of the parts and mods I'm asking about have to be taken as a whole, or groups of components to understand how they will affect my ride, I am questioning how they will interact with my other proposed mods or how they will function "off road".

I realize these forums are HUGE and I havn't scratched the tip of the good posts, but there is a lot of rageposts to wade through and I needed questions answered for my specific needs... sorry if I put it in the wrong place or missed an answer I was looking for, thanks for being so prompt to welcome me and offer me tips though... all of you.

Just to clarify... this car doesn't have to perform like a true rally car, or attack corners like some of these beautiful machines I see here, or be a truly comfortable daily driver either (I'm spartan in my tastes but I want it to perform FAIRLY well in all these apps). It is in this spirit that I itemize my thoughts because looking through these forums I see that combinations of parts produce radically different setups, and I am trying for a strange hybrid of applications, one which I have not found reproduced (maybe I just can't pick the right search terms)... I figured the Member Rides section would work and not be too annoying... sorry for anyone forcibly trolled into this post, and yes I've seen the search button.

                      Sheesh-my head is now spinning.

I'm not going to try to answer all of this, but will hit a few of the points.

-Put the chip in yourself. Seriously. Thinking of paying a shop to do something this simple that takes 45 minutes max is ridiculous.

-The K&N cone filter is a waste of money, and on your dirt roads could be a detriment. Stock filter and airbox is the best flowing and keeps all those small particles of dirt that could get inside your engine out.

-15x7.5" wheels would be the best trade-off in terms of handling and ride comfort.

-Buy a set of used Hella or Bosch euro ellipsoid headlights. Buy a $65 HID kit off of ebay with the correct sized bulbs (yes, I am serious-the kits work fine and are of good quality). Done.

-Z3 1.9L factory shifter is what you want-inexpensive, shortens the throw but isn't notchy.

-For the exhaust? Personally, original equipment cat section with an Eiberspacher (sp?) OEM style muffler. Long lasting, durable, and not overly expensive.

As far as your suspension requirements? It doesn't exist and probably never will in one E30 chassis. I agree with VacMan-buy two cars.

And yes, once again, that search button is your best friend.

Agreed...you want two cars. Get a 325ix for the dirt. Use the 325es for the street.

                            gearing in the steering:

You can speed up the steering by installing an E36 steering rack. From fastest to slowest:
                            Z3 1.9/2.8
                            M3 3.0
                            M3 3.2 / 328 / 318Ti
                            325, 95 and earlier 318

You will need to mod the knuckle and add some spacers. This is covered in the FAQ section.
