There's just really no logic to support the idea that they are junk. Mechanically they are basically identical to the E28 which is arguably the most rugged car BMW ever built. They don't have any more electronics than an E28, so the only stuff that is hard or tricky to find are E24 specific body, trim, and interior parts, but even that stuff is pretty readily available.

As long as the new wheels aren't neon green or something I am actually looking forward to seeing them! Spastic, sir, you have redeemed yourself in my eyes... For what it's worth.
