    1992 Schwarz Black 325i Convertible Restoration/Preservation

I recently purchased this 1992 325i convertible as a replacement for my 1989 325i convertible in Cirrus.

First weekend of March and 70+ degree weather means top down quick trips around.

The Cirrus 89 was bought for a sweet deal back in 2017 (project thread https://www.r3vlimited.com/board/for...aigslist-steal) for almost nothing and had hoped to have a car with a cool/sketchy backstory that I owned forever and loved. Unfortunately, it seemed that for every step I took with that car it ended up taking two steps back. What I thought was a clean enough car with just a sketchy past, ended up being a car with a sketchy past, rust that would have been financially irresponsible to repair and some bad luck. I was sad to be abandoning the 89 project at first as I had a real connection to the car (Stockholm Syndrome maybe) but after getting to know the 92 and looking at it I can't say I feel that way anymore. It will now serve as a parts car for the 92.

The 89 showing off its "good angle".

The 92 is Schwarz 2 over tan automatic with approx 105k. The previous owner reset the trip odo and the gears destroyed themselves but claims they've only driven it a few miles since that happened so that number is close to actual mileage. Unfortunately they reported that to DMV so it has a "TMU" brand on the title, oh well. The previous owner bought it from a relative of the original owner. That person rarely drove it and let it sit in their backyard before selling it to their neighbor who let it sit in his driveway before selling it to me.

Considering the chain of ownership and what came with the car, unfortunately service records are lacking.

All of the booklets and manuals still with the car.

The previous owner did not do any service and I'd be willing to bet the owner before him did none as well. Needless to say, a lot of maintenance is in order. Cosmetically, sitting in yards has taken its toll on the top and interior. The top is there, but wearing thin and the back window is completely clouded up. The sport seats are structurally sound and function properly but the leather is dry and one bolster is shredded. The back seat bottom is completely dry-rotted and ripping apart. The back seat back is surprisingly in great shape, go figure.

The paint is likely original, has its fair share of blemishes and some clearcoat failure on the trunk lid. I'm hoping to salvage the paint. I'm not looking for anything "perfect", but am looking for something presentable. I'll look for a good paint correction job to see what can be done.

Unlike the 89, the rust on this one is far less critical. Just a spot on the lower rear valance, some starting on the battery tray up front and randomly a spot in the door sill area.

The exhaust is just terrible, and this is coming from someone who likes to hear his cars. I am debating whether I scavenge the exhaust off the 89 or take whatever straight pipe mismatched setup is currently on the car and get it to that throaty tone I seek. It is a vert so something just a little louder than stock would probably be about perfect, but I also kind of desire some real "growl", like that throaty/burbly sound you'd hear coming out of a vintage Italian roadster with some crackles on downshift, if that is even possible from a m20. I don't know what the final exhaust will sound like, but this awful drone coming out of it now is deafeningly bad.

I spent a little time this afternoon driving around a few areas very near my house enjoying the warmth.

The front valance has also taken a hit on the left side. It isn't a terribly bad hit, no damage to the fog but it did cause the fender to crease and has the bumper kind of torqued (but undamaged). I've got a few other dents a competent PDR guy can remove. Unfortunately I think the valance is a bit beyond what a PDR guy could do, but I'll let one tell me they can't in person when I have someone out for the few dents here and there. Unfortuantely the fender has rubbed the paint off along the front edge. I'll touch that up and if a PDR guy can't bend the valance back into shape I may try to DIY pull it back out. I'll also be adding an is lip up front when the valance can accept one.

Otherwise, this is a running/driving project. I am an OEM kind of guy and don't ever stray from the "OEM+" style of modifying if it needs to be done. Really this is more of a preservation project. As you can tell from the pictures here I've added my BBS RS001 wheels. I will also swap the getrag 5 speed from the 89 over to the 92, as well as the ellipsoids. I've got a Blaupunkt Bremen on the way and will be installed when that comes in and also some new floor mats. I'll also be recovering the seats in OEM tan leather. Suspension-wise, I'll probably go Koni shocks and I've already got the Bavauto vert lowering springs.
