Yes I do plan on selling them, after being run and what not, seeing what combinations work best. If only the valves were cheaper, couldnt find them for less then 40 a piece.
That along with a cam and better springs is where I would start. I have been doing home port, and polishing for a while now, so I want to see the gains with that as well. Also the upgrade to mustang injectors and modifying the intake for a larger BBK throttle body, something I have tried on turbo imports with great results. Anyway, I appreciate the info, on the engines, although I work on BMW's all day, I only do R&R, never actually tearing the engines apart to gather specs, no time for it, guess I will have to make time sooner or later. I have heard of the megasquirt before, I will definatly be looking into that soon.
    Thanks again for the info

how would a chipped m30b35 and lightweight flywheel do in a e30 with 4.10 gears? :)

The 4.10 would render 1st and 2nd utterly useless. It would be pointless.

It sounds like you have a pretty good handle on what is going to be involved. If you are serious about trying to squeeze some power out of the M30 I would head over to (www.mye28.com) if you haven't already. The consensus over there seemed to be that if you want more power you need to get the M30 breathing more efficiently. There were some flow bench tests done on the head (granted it was a b34 head) but if I was looking for more detailed information I would search around through their archives. Good luck! Keep us posted on your progress.

Just chip it at first, see how that does

m30b35's respond GREAT to MarkD or TMS chips

              and e34 = b35, iirc

Dinan chip really woke up my B34, and short ram intake sounds glooooorious. This is in e24 btw but I do have an 84 633csi motor, maybe I'll tear that down and rebuild it for e30 duty someday

Just picked up two 3.5's, having them decked and honed next week, unless they need a bore. Great crank shop down the street will have the crank polished and measured, no spun bearings and they turned ok, hopefully I wont have to have them cut down. Not sure which direction to go in, yet, either to do a stock rebuild and sell, or build something a bit more modified, only my bank account has the answer at this point.

It's been tried before. If you look up bimmerforums.com there is a dyno thread listing various m30 builds.

The M30 Does not respond well to modifications specifically for increasing the compression. You'll be dissapointed and will have a big hole in your wallet because these things are not cheap.

What M30's do respond well to is forced induction.

Not necessarily true, m30's don't respond well to N/A modifications because very few people spend the money to tune them. The 179 ecu does not respond well to tuning, because it runs closed loop at WOT. There are 250whp n/a m30's out there but they are all running on at least megasquirt w/ 10.5 to 11:1 compression. But I guess you are correct in a way, you won't see gains like people do on s5x's with bolt ons and a custom chip tune.
