The "HOLY HELL im in wayy over my head" build.

    Hi ya.

So i decided its time to finally swap my engine. its an M20, going into an M20. sounds easy right? why do i need a thread for this? OO well thats because i have very little experience with engines. But im a quick learner, and decently mechanically inclined. It may also help that my father has been a BMW mechanic since the 2002 was released. though he's been much too busy.

    so its up to me.

im gonna have alot of questions as i go into this and i just wanted to have a topic to ask em all. and if you guys help, i'll add another nice E30 to our list.

    EDIT Start reading here:

So as i go through the many coolant hoses i have in my garage from various E30s, I cant seem to figure out how they all go together. Ive gotten most through REALoem, but there is one that I cant figure out how it fits in there.

Part number 8 (and hoses 7 and 10) are confusing me a bit. Anyone have a good pic on how that goes in? or a good description?

extra edit... found a decent pic in the engine bay thread.... but where the hell is the fan in front of the water pump? or am i retated and theres no fan for manual trans

I did an M50 swap in a barn with hand tools without having pulled an engine before, then a trans swap in my parking space without having pulled a trans before. Do your homework, and you'll be good. :p

Re: the TDC, there are marks that should line up with marks on the casting on both the cam gear and the crank pulley. Check out pelicanparts for the gasket.

Edit: And I shouldn't have to say this, but use new head bolts.

                  14*44 = $616 for all 14 bolts. Sound reasonable? ;)

Bentley manual is nice, the FSM is better. Get it in this thread. Downside of the FSM is that it has no torque specs, and sometimes it has a tendency to hand wave by assuming you're a dealer tech and have specialized tools, where you obviously don't have any. So it's definitely worth the download, but keep the Bentley as well for cross-referencing.

The whole SET from Pelican is like 16 Bucks if I recall. Not just one. Pelican has Cheap stuff, but depending on where you are on the east Coast, Bavauto ships fast. I often get my stuff next day from them.
