quick question, not to get the thread sidetracked, but i thought the "es" valance only had the 2 lower air holes? and the "is" had all 4 like the one pictured.

                  Timing Belt... water pump.

Chop chop! Don't want to ruin a running engine by being lazy. It's also a great oppertunity to get aquainted with your engine and diagnose any problem areas. Not to mention clean it up a tad. 20 + years of road grime, oil spills, oil leaks, etc, are good to get off the inside.
                  Need a part? PM me.

Nice dude, looks like a good clean starting point. Nice to see the twarbo progress underway

Have you thought about picking up a M20B25 for cheap and boosting that instead?

Also: cam seal, cam seal housing seal. So called "mechanics" seem to miss this easy job while doing the belts. You might wanna grab a spare seal for the oil pump too, maybe even have an oil pan gasket on hand while you are already greasy.

While doing maintenance crap, get yourself a can of CRC "Electrical Cleaner" and a package of pipe cleaners, a small wire brush and a pencil eraser.

Take apart every single electrical connector you can find, scrub and clean all of them. The CRC and pipe cleaners do an amazing job of cleaning the tiny contacts, pencil erasers do wonders for ground lugs.

Just a couple ideas, man. Good luck!
