Dune Buggy Revival Thread

This is how I am going to document this project.

My uncle has been recently diagnosed with cancer for the third time, and we decided that it be best if we got his long time project dune buggy completed for him. So me and my grandpa went to work.

What we had to start with, very rusted

Front end and rear end off, power steering pump removed, tie rods removed, cage off, body off, everything is getting ready to be sand blasted / cleaned



Body is going to my uncle's house to get sanded and other necessary fiber glass work, then frame, cage, other pieces getting sand blasted, me and grandpa have to clean other parts, replace brake lines, etc.

Hopefully we can finish in a few months, as we may be on a limited time schedule

thanks. its going to take a while cause my uncle cant do much and I live a few hours away from my dads side of the family. but while im away its getting sand blasted and cleaned

When I get back we get to paint, then reassemble! Should be kinda quick considering these are very simple buggies

Just a simple motor. My uncle literally has like 3 in his backyard, and I think we just need to clean one and shouldnt (hopefully) have to rebuild it.

S14 has a different bolt pattern :( but i told them to get a subaru motor, Ive been told they have same bolt pattern and can make way more power stock. :p

From what I heard, it should have the same bolt pattern. However, it'd be much heavier and we would have to fab a mount for it. The stock vw motor just hangs by those 4 bolts, but its very lighter.

Stock subaru impreza 2.2 boxer makes ~ 130 hp, stock vw makes ~ 90 but I might have to double check that. But I think with the subaru it'd take more wiring,etc. making it much less simple, but I think it would be totally worth it

do want! i helped a buddy build a sand rail shortly after i got out of high school and it was a blast. you've got options in the air-cooled vw boxer motors, something that light doesn't really need much to be a good time. i had a '66 bug with a 1776cc motor, stock was 1300, an that was a great little car, the 'rail we built had a single port 1300, iirc and it had enough power to lift the front end off the ground with 2 people it it.

they produced the boxer motor in a lot of configurations from 1200cc to 2 liters or better, and companies like www.cbperformance.com sell lots of aftermarket stuff to increase displacement, flow, and so on. my 1776 had cb performance 044 heads with kadron carbs, which i liked a lot.

in the same of simplicity, and cost, the aircooled dub motor rocks.

oh, and let me say, i'm lucky to have survived being a part of that sand rail build at 18 years old, that little rocket was an accident waiting to happen.

ya, were getting the motor back soon. Theyre boring it and cleaning it, I think rebuilding it. My grandpa got the cage and some other stuff sand blasted, were going to finish cleaning, painting, etc. and then reassemble it when I get out of school (staying there for two weeks ftw)
