Hysteria and the Art of E30 Maintanence

    -------------------------------------------------------------
David's Special List of Special People to Thank, Specially.

    1. Joe Navarro (Dr.Strangelove) - For dropping the knowledge and lending a hand the entire way through this project.
    2. Danny Ciopasiu - For hooking me up with what I'm sure will be a running list, currently including: 74k bottom end, subframe, oil pan, ...
    3. Patrick @ BMA - For sending me boxes full of goodness for discounted prices.

    -------------------------------------------------------------

I'm in one of those 'Make a Project Thread' kind of moods. ...for a multitude of reasons I suppose. One being I'm waiting on a second wave of parts. Two being I'm the only one left at work and I just drank a double espresso'd coffee with a dash of milk and a ladle of sugar.

Allow me to forewarn you, this first post will most likely keep your peen flaccid considering my lack of sexy pictures and shiny parts. I'll attempt to use my professional photoshopping skills to bedazzle up the photos I inevitably took with my iPhone.

    INTRODUCTION

The story begins rather drab and dreary, with a slew of unfortunate events all leading up to my decision to finally rent a bigger garage to throw the E30 into so that a rebuild may commence.

Unfortunate Events and Issues in Chronological Order (with pictures to follow):

    - Car runs super rich and burns a qt. of oil per month.
    - Car is the victim of a hit and run... 3 times in 6 months. Door, fender and hood are dented/scraped.
    - I decide it's finally time to get a garage. A 2-car is acquired.
    - The night before moving the car to the garage, hit-and-run #4 occurs. The worst of all. Scrape to the fender, broken side marker, scraped bumper, and METAL SHEARED FROM MY NEW SCHMIDT. Opposite of happy.
    - Oil pan is destroyed through the skidplate via some train tracks and jenky Chicagoness.
    - Turns out subframe is also toast.
    - New oil pan goes in. Cracked within a week.
    - Car runs like shit.
    - After numerous diagnosis attempts, it's time to pull the motor and refresh gaskets, seals and vac lines since it's leaking in more places then it's not.

    The Before Pics

    When she was all pristine:

Incident #1 (+ ugly rear wheel gap and rusty trunk lid). My muppet legs and I scale the track fence in the background as Patrick snaps off pictars.:

    Incident #2:

    Incident #3:

    Thus concludes the starting point.

    THE PLAN

    - Rebuild/Refresh Motor
    - Full body work and paint (PO's Maaco job needs to go. Full metal strip down time.)
    - Low Boost Turbo Application
    - Wheel refinishing
    - New shock housings (modified/lowered)
    - Interior swap (Cardinal - if you're selling I'm buying/trading)
    - Spend all my money

    Project Kick Off!

    - Motor has been pulled and the block has been completely torn down.

In doing so we found broken rings on 3 cylinders. One of the pistons from aforementioned shitty cylinder had formed a hot spot on it, which is basically a hole in the side of the piston. The cylinder wall was also scored to the point where an overbore was all that could save it, and I wasn't about to drop $1100 on pistons.

Luckily I know awesomely generous E30 folk in the IL area. Aforementioned Generous Folk, Danny Ciopasiu, hooked me up with a full bottom end from an auto Cabrio with 74k miles for $100!

    for $100!

    ...for $100!

    Awesome. Thank you sir.
He has also since hooked me up with a new sub frame, and oil pan, which I took the liberty of destroying immediately.

The parts list so far is as follows, with as many part numbers as I felt like looking up:

Tore the new block down, sourced from Danny, and inspected it. Looked a hell of a lot better then the previous one. Most of the bearings were in good condition (however a couple were scored so I'll be replacing both main and rod bearings in full). Cylinder walls still had very clear cross hatching (pics).

Bad news: we found shards of metal in the coolant passages of the block. A couple ribbon like strands of metal and a triangular chunk. Danny had mentioned that the motor suffered an overheat once before and the head was replaced. After some detective work, we found that the triangular piece was an impeller blade from the water pump.

Later in the week I will be sending the motor out to get honed, hot tanked and magnafluxed - to make sure the block wasn't cracked during the overheat.

BMA delivers the goods along with a small box of my satisfaction.

That head gasket will actually be going back to BMA, to be replaced by an MLS gasket. Considering the setup will, eventually, only run around 7-10 psi, I'm not going to O-Ring the block.

      New Block - 74k

      Awww, sad.

Starting to clear everything out of the bay to make way for body work and paint.

Currently - trying to figure out how the balls to remove the fuse box without making a side project out of that alone. I might just see if I can get it out of the way enough to get some paint under and around it. Any insight is appreciated. Also could use some guidance in removing the ABS (for re-installation later).

      That's all for now.

Looks like a good start. I saw you have a new breather hose, I always thought on a turbo you wanted to do an oil catch from the valve cover in order to keep from putting pressure on the crank case and just block off the tb.

I'm concentrating on getting the motor running NA first. My funding isn't unlimited so te car will probably be running NA for atleast a couple months while turbo parts and funds accumulate.
