    -89 320i Turbo

    Hi guys!

To start with, I'm from norway, so pardon my french, so to speak. :)
Wanted to share my neverending story with other E30 enthusiasts.
(Original-Polizei, be warned.) The car is ment for track use an road abuse so to say.
Bought the car two years ago as a daily driver, with just about everything either defective, or soon to be. Brakes, suspension, exhaust, rust; the whole nine yards.

Some pictures of the car when I bought it:

A wee bit of polishing to make it look a bit better -

At first, we did a trackday with the stock 2litre 129bhp engine, and soon found at we needed more ooomph.
But thank to the newly purchased FK coilovers, E28 M535 diff, Z3 steering rack, Sabelt steering wheel and buckets, we had lots of fun.

    Homemade mounts for seats:

But, as usual, things didn't go on as planned..
Since both me and the co-owner were used to having turbocharged cars with a lot more power, i.e an -95 Audi S6 Avant and a -86 Audi "ur"- quattro with a 400hp+ 20v turbo, we decided to skip the N/A route and go for turbocharging to extract some more power. :p

Trawling the 'net for parts for our planned turboconversion resulted in buying a 325i engine, already converted with T3 turbo on a diesel manifold, homemade inletmanifold with 12 injectors, customchip for turbocharging, thicker headgasket, machined pistons and some other goodies.

We even got a Getrag 260 'box as a bonus! :p

New Sachs Racing ..618 clutch was also bought as a precaution.

Modified Audi S2 intercooler, a snug fit behind the bumper:

Setrab oilcooler, riveted to the front bumper

Finally, after about a week with fighting som electrical gremlins, we got the car up and running.

Two small clips of first start up of the car:

But, bad luck was to strike down on us.

As Frank (co-owner and head mechanic) was out cruising, the engine started making strange (and bad) noises, oily exhaust poisoned the neighbourhood, and the engine lost all of its oil an coolant through the waterpump(..) and expansiontank.

Result: Shot bearings and cracked head.

I suspect the cracked head came with the "steal" we did buying the cheap engine..

      Gunk found by the waterpump:

But, never giving up, we took a long hard talk about what to do, and decided to give it the full welly.
Up on car stands to remover engine and trans, but little did we know it was not to be driven for over a year. That was NOT the plan..:(

The trusty, old banger place outside the shop for hibernation. Poor, old thing.

Those m20b20's are sluggish! Hopefully with the turbo it will put down some good power. Good luck with it....(m50 swapp maybe at this time?)

Quick question, why would a bicyclist park their bike in a handicap parking place?

Scorn cylinders, warped and cracked head isn't at all a good starting point for extracting some decent power.
Being as broke as a hobo, we looked into what we should do.
The decision was to stay with the original 2 litre in-line six, and doing som low-budget work. The fact that the low-budget was about to be relatively big budget, didn't seem to bother us.

Did a lot of planning and gahtering go-fast parts, and ended up with the following setup:

-Machined standardsized, O.E pistons, standard O.E rods in reconditioned skimmed block with pianowire o-rings in the block, supporting the slightly thicker (+0,3mm) headgasket. And, of course, all new bearing, gaskets, seals and piston rings.

Weightadjusted rods and pistons, kitchen scale does the job nicely!

Skimmed head, modified combustionchambers, Catcams turbocamshaft, dBilas adjustable camgear, PPF Heavyduty rockerarms, PPF stg2 Valvespring-kit, CrMo retainers, new stemseals++

Everything lined up and timed correctly, or at least we hope so. :)

The turbocharger is a Precision PT5865 billet mounted on a PPF manifold.

ECU we're using is a Autronic SM4, controlling six MSD 8245msc coils.

                  Innovate LM2 Widebandlambda

Trickflow fuelfilter, Hurst line-lock an cool-itThermo-Tec exhaustwrap:

Fuelsupply is standard fuelpump feeding a 2,5 litre catch/swirlpot mounted in the trunk, with a Bosch 044 pump feeding six 780cc Precision injectors with an Areomotive FPR.

Don't have anymore pictures at this moment, but I will update when I get the camera back home again.

                  Cheers,

                  Tommy

Next step on th ladder is absolutely M50 swap, but for now we'll stick with the old M20 heap. Or at least until it brakes down.

I take it you already sold your old bottom mount manifold.

Not yet, it's doing a nice job as a shelfwarmer in the shop.

Some more work done, started wiring up the Autronic:

                        The fuel system, homemade swirlpot:

The car outside in the sun, with some "new" wheels on:

Hope to get the wiring for the Autronic done this week, maybe try first start-up later this week. :)

Ok, as requested. A few pics of the quattro, and some of the quattro and our mate's E36 M3 3.2 at our annual trip to Nürburgring:

That's about all the pictures I have of the quattro. It is soon to be restored to its original glory, after having a hard life with a 20v engine, and lots of use and abuse in its earlier days.
                              Sweet car, though. ;)
