    Project Hoopty Part 1&2

I figured I'd start a log of some things I've done to my POS. Pretty boring and some low rez cell phone pictures but here it goes anyways.

It started with a Craigslist find that had been listed for $2500 and then dropped to $1900. I called a friend to see if he wanted to go check it out but it turned out he already had, and had talked the guy down to $680. He already had a e30 coupe and didn't really want another so I dropped the $$$ and drove it home. Unfortunately I didn't take many before pictures but...

The car came from Michigan and I was amazed at the amount of body rot, but for $680 I still thought it was an ok deal. There were a few minor issues like the passenger side sway bar mount being completely broken off ect. Non Airbag wheel meaning the little incident the guy had with the deer wasn't that little. This explains the grey body panels but thankfully the damage doesn't extend much past that.

Passenger side jacking point or lack there of

    Core Support Damage

Adequate battery ventilation? I think so

I started collecting a few minor things from forum members to fix all the little issues as well as a set of H&R Sports and 15mm Drop Hats. Around the same time I helped R4esh lower his car so we had a borrowed spring compressor and I decided to lower mine. This was were things started to go wrong. I started pulling the struts only to find a good deal of the suspension was held together by corrosion. I absolutely hate to buy a bunch of shit twice so I decided to pull the trigger on an MZ3 5lug swap.
    1. 98 M3 Knee assemblies w/o calipers from local JY $212.00
    2. H&R Sports $200
    3. 15mm Drop Hats $85
    4. Calipers $115
    5. Rotors $200
    6. UUC SS Lines $80
    7. Hawk HPS Pads $50
    8. AKG subframe reinforcement and replacement JY subframe $130
    9. E36 Steering rack and required spacers $140
    10. Ball Joints, CABs, M3 End Links, Strut Bearings, Tie rods, Rack Boots are brand new Approx $300~$350

This was a victorious moment, it was pretty easy but working in gravel just plain sucks.

My method of holding up the m20 while there was no subframe

    L to R Stock e30, 98 e36 M3, H&R Sport

Backing plates pulled off by hand

Just about everything was pulled apart, thoroughly cleaned, painted and reassembled with new hardware.

e30 vs e36 M3 rotors (before new rotors had arrived)

I know its going to be covered in brake dust within a week but I couldn't help myself

    Monster calipers FTW

Some almost free DS1's from a friend of a friend w/ my lip temporarily mounted.:D

before I had the rear springs in

should be fairly menacing once its all actually together properly and the same color.

And worst of all my empty tool kit :(
There isn't really much of a write up needed as the procedure is almost identical to using e30 parts. It is literally plug and play. Thanks to Artyp for his writeup on the 5 lug setup and all the necessary components.
More updates to come but this pretty much catches everyone up to speed.

And before anyone asks why I started with such a shitty shell, I bought it knowing that I was eventually going to replace everything. This is going to be my daily that will most likely never see a show so it doesn't make sense to beat the hell out of a clean shell. This build will be all function before form, All go no show. It might never get a new coat of paint, but a s52, s54, or possibly a LS1 is definitely on the list. Eventually if I have some extra money and clean coupe pops up in the area I'll just swap the front and rear sub frames to the new one and get it aligned Voila show worthy.

The Volvo was my daily driver for about 6 months but I decided against 4 wheel drum brakes and pizza cutter tires, plus I'd be in fourth gear (top gear) around town. It was interesting but I have recently recognized my hoarding tendencies and sold it off. I was sad but such is life.
I really miss my 280z too may it rest in peace. In a moment of weakness I sold it to some Cali kids who I later found out hit someone with it. I'm sure by now its as good as dead. I had it for almost 3 years and its really what I would consider my first car, but I had to sell it due some family matters
The 240z I picked up because I was in the right place at the right time. Its a series 1 1971 240z something that most likely should have been or should be returned to original but I had different plans. I wanted to rebuild that thing from the ground up. Tube/composite chassis, rocker dual wishbone suspension, sparse, pretty much skin it and put on an Formula 1 chassis. Most likely never going to happen, I'll probably end up having to sell it.

That is a Fiberfab Valkyrie (read GT40 replica) that belongs to my father until I can convince him otherwise. It cant drive anywhere because it so low but its just flat out amazing. Its a tube chassis, fiberglass body, mid engine, definition of fucking awesome. Like the 240 it has so much potential but the resources available to me are nonexistent in relation to what either need. Its got a 289 mated to 914 transaxel, which translates to ticking time bomb. I want the new shelby alum v8 motor with ITBs and velocity stacks mated to a mendola box. Yep almost 600hp weighing at less than 2800lbs, way more than I could handle but it sure would be fun to try.

                    When I grow up...

I had similar rust in my old 325e, ended up turning it into a parts car because it was so bad. I really admire that you'll still use this car tho.

Since its near the top I'll give a mini update. I have been driving the car around for the past few days collecting the final parts and pieces to do the rear suspension. Dropped by the stealership to pick up a few items I had ordered and overheard a salesman and some ancient, fresh off the golf course, discussing artistic license obviously talking about my car.
At first I was a little offended but then I was overcome with a enormous amount of pride and couldn't wait to bring it back over and over again to be an eyesore on their lot. I'm thinking they'll be especially pleased when I get the black paint job with lime green wheels.

                            You asked for it

Well its been quite awhile. Since the last update I had some serious overheating issues so I did the Tbelt, Water Pump, and VC gasket. I also pulled the non functional AC out and put in an electric fan.

Almost immediately following getting it running again a 95 M3 popped up for a stupid price, so I proceeded to do the most logical thing and empty my checking account to the last dollar to buy it. A very irresponsible and risky financial decision, but I have to make those mistakes while I still have the excuse of being young and stupid. I've already made back what I spent on it, but for awhile if I wasn't selling parts, I wasn't eating Go ahead I deserve it.

After a few months of selling and trading parts around I ended up with some other goodies.

When it finally came down to putting all of this into the car I couldn't do it. Why you ask? Well because this thing is a heap.

It's all easily fixable, but I don't have the time or space to really tear into it. So I began the search for another shell. This is where I came across Murphy's law Pt. II Whenever you aren't looking for something it's all you can seem to find, but the moment you start looking for it, it's nowhere to be found. An early model eta finally popped up locally and since I was desperate I picked it up. A day later 2 1991 DS 318is shells pop up. :hitler::curse::hitler::curse::hitler:

FML but moving on to last the last few days....
Finals wrapped up and I tore into the eta shell. The m20 had broken a Timing belt and the valves and pistons got together for some sweet sweet loving. Only picture I have of that progress.

Yes being the broke student that I am, without an engine hoist, I dropped the subframe and engine together. Only took 3 hours and a black widow or two for me to get it out, but then I had to wait for my friends bronco to pull the pallet out from under the car. This front suspension will go on the 325i and the 5lugzzzz will go on this. The 325i's motor still runs like an industrial strength sewing machine. I'm not sure of it's fate yet.
