ETURDY - M50 Swap Story (Pic Heavy)

Having finally sampled a few BMWs in my time on this earth, I've decided I am ready for another e30. But first, let me give you some back story.

Here's my first e30, which I owned until Freshman year of college. It met its demise at the hands of some half retarded soccer mom, who when the light turns green, regardless of who's in front of her, just accelerates. I'm still sour over this....

    :(

After getting the $$ for the e30 I ended up buying this guy

    Which turned into this guy

    And then into this guy....

This time, I was rear ended at a stop sign. The e36, like my old e30, was totaled (bent frame).

Despite this, I bought back the e36 and parked it. Still unsure of what I was going to do with it (part it out, swap, etc.). I used the rest of the insurance $$ to bought this: 1987 535is.

The 535is was a great cruiser, and had a fun torquey motor, but it just wasn't was fun as the e30 or e36. SO, I ended up selling it, and started to drive the rear ended e36 with the intentions of finding a donor car. After shuffling around funds, I eventually picked up this bad mamajamma.

You may be wondering why I picked up such a shi**y looking e30. Well, for a couple of reasons. It was a one owner, and she actually bought it in Germany, and I have the title to prove it.

Another reason being the interior. It is in pretty awesome condition, and came with a few cool goodies...

Observe, only one rip on the left driver bolster.

Found this stuff in the trunk, which I thought was pretty cool.

These are the plates destined for her once the annoying (yet super cool :???:) German title is worked out through the DMV.

So the next step, now that I have a proper chassis, is to start gutting the e36. I ended up renting a garage to use as a storage unit/ the garage intended for the swap. The landlord thinks I'm only doing minor maintenance, let's hope she's not on r3v

    The swap has finally begun...

My good buddy Justin came down from Richmond to Norfolk to help with the removal of the m50.

ECU, throttle, cooling, and intake all unhooked

    Exhaust

With everything unhooked, it was time to start pulling the motor.

Due to the low ceiling of the garage, removal of the motor was a bit challenging.

But after roughly 10 hours of work, the motor finally made it's way out of the car.

My next plan of action is to finish parting out the e36, scrap the shell, and get the rest of my swap parts in order: engine and tranny mounts, brake booster.

    MORE UPDATES, VERY SOON

    Side-note:

I'm selling set of Bilstein PSS9 coilovers (e36), a full black leather e36 interior, m50 manifold, and a pair of Corbeau LG1s if anyone is interested.

Looks like you are well on your way! Nice find with the Germany title and goodies in the trunk!

Should have moved the car outside then jacked it up unbolt shaft, tranny brace and then the sub-frame bolts. Then place a few tires under the engine and let it drop and unbolt the six nuts on the struts. I get them out in 2 hours that way. So damn easy.

      I just PMed you:

I have an e34 oil pan, oil pick up, e34 throttle cable and dip stick. You need all this for the m50 swap. PM me if you want it all shipped. No cracks

The bummer was I had to keep it in the garage b/c other tenants in a house right in front, park right there. I wanted to keep it inside to keep the tenants happy, and the landlord unaware.

And thanks for the oil pan and throttle cable offer. I actually already have them, picked it all up at the local pick and pull for $20!!!

Question: Why does a Germany imported car have US grills, weaves, and side markers?

From what I understand, it was ordered in Germany and picked up in Munich, under the pretense that it was intended to be driven in America. The vins and title match up....

It's a US car, no doubt

I believe that its best to be using the M3 components for a 5lug swap otherwise he'll have some caster issues up front. The bits from the rear don't bolt up though.

No I'm not doing the 5-lug swap. I thought about it, but I'd have to buy new suspension anyway (e36 pss9 shocks are too long in back, and the spring rates are a bit soft for my liking), plus m3 brakes, plus diff control arms, and diff rear trailing arms off a ti or z3. My priority is more on the swap. I'd rather get the e36 out of my hair, and buy some fresh suspension from GC or AST :pimp: down the road.
