Got 2 boxes of parts in the mail yesterday. After this friday I have 6 days off in a row. I plan to get the convertible top on and get some work done on the 02. Step one is the new starter - which appears to be the coveted SR441X.

If I can remember to I'll document the vert top replacement well. I may be too busy throwing tools to pick up the camera, though.

Removing the top was a btch. It's been replaced before - and apparently by hacks. There was silicone slathered everywhere and the rivets were occasionally replaced by crappy screws. Having that said, I'm fortunate that all of the gaskets were salvagable. Up tp this point nothing has been particually difficult - just follow the instructions from world uph. Today I'm going to remove all of the adhesive from the frame and hopefully install the top.

                UPDATE:

The convertible top is on. I did it by myself and it is not especially difficult.

Some tips that I have learned in retrospect:

When the old top and tension straps are off, put the boot cover back on and make your adjustments to the frame. It's much easier than doing it later and extreme adjustments can result in slack in your cloth.

If you suspect that the top has already been replaced, get your hands on some extra screws/hardware. Specifically the ones that hold the tension straps down. A lot of my hardware was replaced with CRAP.

Buy lots of various sized rivets.

Use brush on adhesive. The spray shit is VERY messy.

When removing the side cables, be VERY careful when separating the bracket. It will snap readily. Perhaps even order 2 new ones - I wish I had!

DO NOT COVER YOUR WINDOW IN MASKING TAPE like the instructions say. I have a ton of adhesive to remove off of my brand new window as a result.

Buy two bottles of adhesive remover and 24 cheap towels. I used all of it.

Last but not least, don't do this all at night like I had to. (I work at night and am therefore awake at night)

                  New plans for the 2002:

                  m42 with e36 134a AC

I'll be gathering parts for a while so progress will be slow. I have a budget of $500 per month on non-maintenance related car expenses. Here's what I'll be looking for:

JakeB's bracket kit - includes motor mounts, transmission mount, CSB relocation provisions and a custom exhaust manifold
                  m42 longblock
A complete e36 AC system for the m42 or m44
                  A 2002 AC console - preferably BEHR
                  m42 wiring harness and ECU
                  e30 318i radiator and hoses
                  Spal electric fan
                  e30 intake and oil pan
                  Getrag 240
                  e30 m42 manual DS
Electric speedo conversion ((or tap tranny?)Not transvestite)
                  late 318i fuel pump
                  Custom throttle cable
                  COP conversion
                  m42 chip
                  Ansa exhaust
                  Stock shift carrier

I'm hoping that the chip, COP and lack of a cat will buy me some HP. If not, jake says he's piecing together a budget 8psi turbo kit with a custom burned chip that will be good for 180-200 HP. I haven't done squat to the 2002 due to a lack of time and my occupation with the convertible - but it's time will come.

Whoa. Details on this M42 bracket kit.
I've always wondered but was never able to find out, is the m42 iron block?
Good luck with the new car

Good choice of car. Very handsome rides.

The simplicity not fettered with electrics. Just a boiled down driving machine.

And yes, driving gloves. More for open top cars, a Healey of sorts or some older Jay Leno garage choice. This is what my vert is to me, top down, Christopher Cross over cassette tape, members only jacket, going to Annapolis , looking at sailboats (Christopher Cross - Sailing of course), finger sandwiches, madras pants and taking up two parking spots.

Drinking Tab, that's good. Cupholders or between the legs?

Great plan for the 2002, I love the idea of a M42 but I refuse to get sidetracked again on the engine plans for my sahara.

I actually have an AC console sitting in my garage you are welcome to have for the price of shipping. It certainly isn't a Behr but I'm never going to use it.

Is it a frigiking? Either way, I'll take it. Shoot me a price shipped to 77007.

It's iron block, with aluminum head.
