    My 325e Build Thread

    The History:

I bought the car on a whim in June of 2009, I wasn't looking for a second car I just love browsing Craigslist. Anyway, it was a two owner car. The man I bought it from had it since 1991. He did a lot of maintenance work both, good and bad.

    1986 325 M20B27
    Bronzit on Houndstooth
    5 speed
    186,000 miles

The car was repainted about two years ago, unprofessionally in a garage, black. The repaint was due to a lot of faded bronzit and a truck rolling into the front of the car on a hill. The clutch was replaced and all four corners got new brake pads and rotors. No brake pad senors though. The car came equipped with one option... BMW wind visor for the sunroof, a $220 option back in 86.

I test drove it and was really impressed, no leaks, no funny business.

My girl friend and I named him Charlie on the drive home. He was welcomed in to the family with open arms.

    Cleaning Him Up

After we brought him home a wash and wax was in order.

Note: Bronzit under-bumper areas front and rear.

Next was a thorough interior cleaning. I don't have very many pictures of this but it was dirty as hell and I made it clean again. :D

I ditched those cheap seat covers, the dashboard cover, the floor mats and that nasty shift knob. I am now rocking an OEM BMW wooden shift knob with 5spd insert, no dash cover and no seat covers.

I had the carpet and seats professionally shampooed (HAHAH only cost me $22!) That made a big difference, but I don't have any pics to prove it. :headbang:

It was about a month after I bought the car it started leaking power steering fluid...badly. Which required a new PS rack. $110.00 + $220.00 for install. (I know I should have upgraded to a E36 rack, but money was tight at the time)

I sprayed the front and rear under bumper areas black, clear front lights were on - $44 and I had a creative moment of clarity and painted the headlight yellow.

Then came blacked out kidney grills and a euro plate.

It was love. That sticker has since been replaced with a new and improved design.

I found a local E30 parts car that willingly donated its IS trunk lip, cruise control unit and blinker switch.

    Christmas 2009

This was a bad start to anyones christmas morning... It was mostly due to ice buy my speed and worn out tires sealed the deal.

I ended up hitting a small tree  Here is the Damage.

    April 2010

I bent a bottle cap from hitting a curb in the snow back in January 2010. So I picked this bad boy up for $20 to replace the bent one.

It looks pretty gross, but it cleaned up pretty well. I have thoughts of refinishing all my bottle caps in the near future. Just for fun.

I also came across a new chrome grill to replace my shitty broken blacked out grill.

    Late Spring 2009

    I found some doors.

    Along with:

    New Pedal pads
    A new glove box latch
    New tail light gaskets

Just in case you've never seen a new tail light gasket. : /

Still waiting to be installed are:

New front and rear brake pad sensors
    Valve cover gasket

I tightened up my e-brake, reattached the parking brake light, cleaned the car inside and out.

    It was a good weekend.

    Early June

First, I replaced all three belts.

Then, I bought a set of IX weaves with tires and a M20B25 Valve cover.

    Then, I cleaned them up.

Here is the valve cover which was sand blasted prior to purchase. $20.

    The weaves.

Its amazing how clean they got, and in all honesty I didn't clean them that well. I was so surprised to see how good they looked afterward.

Mid June 2010 I started in on the body work.

    Almost 200,000 miles!

Here are a few shitty pics from todays work!

    Woot.

Then I had to sand down that nassssty hood.

July 1st I bought a chip, 4 bilstein sports and Ireland Engineering race springs. The chip made a huge difference!

Here is my progress mid way with all the body work, doors, fender and hood sanded ready for paint. This was my first time doing body work, it was pretty fun.

I have a thing for two tone cars. The tape was due to just getting home from the E30 picnic in Washington.

The 15" weaves have since been sanded down and are also ready for paint.

By the beginning of Aug 2010 I had the car back from paint and I got the new suspension on. Progress feels and looks great.

I got the new body panels painted.
I got the bilsteins and IE3s on.
and I finally got the right spacers.

The wheels were still not finished but they would be soon.

Pre- Drop OEM Eta suspension with about 200,000 miles worth.

    Mid Aug 2010

The wheels are just now getting some attention because my water pump started to leak and I had to take car of that before I could put money into the wheels. I ended up replacing the water pump, tstat and timing belt all in one go. Wow what a different all those things made. I feel like I got an extra 15 whp. :alright

I finally got some free time after the water pump fiasco to finish the wheels. They came out ok, not my best work by a long shot. The paint I used wasn't the color I really wanted. I should have coughed up the extra dough for OEM BMW wheel paint.... Which I may do this coming summer.

AND by the end of Aug 2010 I Finally I had the car where I wanted it. Dropped with some 15s. :cool

After the spacers the specs are ET16 front / ET11 rear

    The fitment pic

And a close up pic, refinished by yours truly.

This car is so much fun, its my drift/beater/milage maker/work-horse/project car. :D :D :D

Here are some updated pics with all that was painted. It has been raining here all week and the whole car is filthy, including everything that just got painted. Although, even when its dirty like this all the trim, bumpers, grills and mirrors still look 100x better than it did before. I wish I had taken some close up before pictures for comparison.

The mirrors looked horrid before. They were so faded and scratched up. This is a huge improvement.

The grills got a fresh coat as well.

The photos came out a little bit noisy because it was getting dark but what ever.

It's scary how much your car reminds me of my old eta. With that said, I love it.
Your signature picture has been removed since it contained the Photobucket "upgrade your account" image.

Fix the curbage on your wheels. It'll cost you like a 5 dollar tube of bondo and maybe an extra 15 minutes per wheel. I'd definitely do a valve cover like that if my car wasn't red. What are you doing to refinish the wheels? I wanna do mine but I don't fancy sanding fucking weaves by hand...Also, what paint do you use?

I have used some bondo like stuff in the past and it turned out like shit... Maybe that was my fault maybe not. Regardless, I feel kinda jaded towards it. Unless you have some tips on how to use it properly? I'm interested.

I sanded them all by hand. It took me a longggggggg time! :|

I'm using dupli color. I havent really sprayed them yet. I did one super light coat but it was too cold for the paint to bond.

Well...what exactly went wrong? I just clean it out (wire brush wheel on a dremel) and put on some bondo with a putty knife. Then sand and more bondo, repeat until there are no more pits in it, and paint.
