Caused by stupid torque transfer; stupid as in - instantaneous load transfer and my decision to continue running an unsprung disc after I already cracked an output flange on the trans. FACEPALM
A couple seam welds and it'll be good enough for me to be back in action. Good thing I have a sense of humor...
Seen it happen a few times, more on rusty buckets. If I were you, I'd look at Fair!'s thread from Vorshlag. They swapped in a dual ear differential and built a special mount into their cage, but you could do something similar.
looks to me like it pulled away from the floor of the trunk as well. Gonna take some beating to get it to sit back flush before you can brace it back up.

I just did an E36 dual ear swap into mine also. I used 2X2 .120" wall DOM square tubing for a new crossmember and 1/4" plate for the mount tabs. I can honestly say I will never break this new setup I have... way stronger than original. Look at it on my thread links in my sig...
