My 328iSE hits 151mph and that is a massive engine with so much torque and a 2.93 diff. I've considered in past an M42 low pressure turbo project as all the internals are perfect for the job.

Because an E36 is heavier than an E30.....?

Weight has nothing to do with top speed, the e30 is as aerodynamic as a brick:rofl: No way you're hitting 150 in an m42 e30.

So I got all the pins out of the middle section but I can't figure out how to get the pins out of fuses 1-30. Anyone got any tips?

Props to you for taking this on, but I can tell you for sure, that other than the mpgs, the m42 is a dog, had a e36 with it, and that car did not get out of its own way.

Thanks but I think it will be a fun car with the single row timing, lightweight flywheel, cop, cold air, and a mark d. Not trying to make a race car here trying to have daily cruiser with a little pep.

                Props on the project.

I expect to see pics and write-ups as you go. :D

I may end up doing something similar, but track orientated. Still can decide if I want to run STU or STL (assuming the car makes/survives its first chump race). STL (max engine size 2.0L), the M42 would be ideal.

Be prepared to lose what is arguably the most enjoyable thing about an E30; that straight six growl.

Also, I don't know what kind of M20B25s you guys have stateside, but in Europe the M20B25 has 35 more hp, 39 ft/lbf more torque, and weighs a mere 30lb more. Turbo and stroker potential is also decreased enormously. The engines aren't even in the same class.

Honestly the only reason to keep/mod an M42 is because a) you already have one and can't afford/complete a swap, or b) your race class doesn't allow engines above 1,800cc.

Not trying to be a dick, just don't really understand what sort of false information you must have been fed to even contemplate this swap.

Im assuming youre reffering to an eta and ignoring the mountain of torque advantage it has.

                      woulda done a headswap. i got 25-29mpg with my 2.7i and a 2.93

I know everyone on r3v's favorite quote is "because race car" but again I am not trying to build a fast car.

It's not only because of going fast, but an engine with more power does not need to rev as high as a less powerful engine to do the same task (usually). It makes normal everyday things much easier and more peaceful such as, pulling away from a stoplight/sign, or not having to downshift while going up a hill. And let me tell you, I know what it's like to have a small gutless engine, as an owner of a m10, I know first hand. But even I am going up in displacement (although minor), and throwing a cam in it to give it more life. I love how torque feels, that's why I'm going to be picking up a e28 528e for dirt cheap to be my DD, and my 318i as my hooligan antics car (live in a mountain town, tons of fun curves everywhere, m10 is perfect)

^ Are you talking to yourself?

A M10 is nothing like a M42 besides that they have the same number of cylinders. I've had all the motor versions offered in an E30 (minus the M10). None of them are particularly "fast".... The M42 is honestly the funnest one I've owned of the bunch. It revs very nicely. It's balanced and has plenty of capabilities. Why are people still talking about this?

                              Because http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e_I13Ya9EGQ

Because he just said "trying to have daily cruiser with a little pep" and is swapping for a very high-revving engine.

Because nothing about any of it makes any sense, and misguided people like you telling him it's a 'better' engine, are going to leave him disappoint.

                                Because steetracing?

quote me where I said it was better... I said I have more fun with this car than the other E30's I've had.

grow up... there's nothing "misguided" about my thoughts. I am speaking purely from personal experience.

I guess you didn't read your own quote. He said a LITTLE pep. There's nothing grand about a 325i or e motor in stock form. People are fooling themselves if they think so. It's a 6 cylinder that doesn't even make 200 crank HP. They need lots of love too.
