Well, I haven't done anything with this thread lately, so here is an update.

I'm FINALLY employed so I have some decent income rolling in. I'm also throwing out the $1000 budget from here on out. It feels nice to get a pay check!

In the meantime, I did some things that were free or cheap.

I resprayed the wheels in a nickel color, and finished removing the pinstripe residue. Also removed the rear spring pads.

    Excuse the phone pics....

My driver's door was pretty smashed in since I got it, so I've been keeping an eye out for a replacement.

Since finding a Hellrot door would be just too easy, I ended up finding a zinnoberrot door at pull a part. However, my lock cylinder was broken, so I ended up using a spare to rebuild it. NOT fun.

Old and broken on the left.

    It totally matches

Wish my girlfriend would work on my car with me. She generally just tells me I am wasting my money.

It has been far too long since I've updated this thread!

The car is up and running now! I have taken it down the street, but haven't had the opportunity to really have any fun since I just got the tachometer working tonight.

It TOO damn loud as it is with open headers. I can't wait to get an exhaust on this thing!

Staying with the budget-build criteria in mind, I used a Stillen Pop-charger intake that was made for 300zx's. I had it lying around, so why not!

I plan on making a heat shield or a cover for it.

Here is the cool part...A neat little velocity stack around the MAF.

The car originally had pinstriping, but the PO removed it and left all the residue still on there. Nothing would get it off until I used some 3M stuff specifically made for this. Worked like a charm!

After a little polish and wax. Compare to the door.

You guys can laugh if you want, but I made my own shift knob and stained it. I really like it!

I used one of those $22 ebay short shift levers, and it was a tad too notchy, so the tall knob I made did the trick!

And I did a little review on the ebay lever. I believe DTMfiberwerkz sells the same one for around $70.....

Awesome build! I just swapped my '84 318i over to an M50 on about the same budget you guys are working with thanks to craigslist and a local pick and pull. I really like the use a bucket loader as an engine lifter. Now that I think about it, I helped a friend pull an engine from a Cavalier to swap the trans and his friend supplied a back hoe as the means to lift the engine. Good luck on your project.

What a pain it was to set the motor in its mounts by myself! It took me about 6 hours! I ended up having to use 2 jacks and pry bar to get it set in place.

I used e34 automatic mounts which fit reasonably well.

I have one already, but brace yourself for the hate my shitbox gets.

Anyway, I'm really hoping I don't get that pleasant surprise you did when I take my motor out But awesome updates, love threads like this.

Thanks man! The M5 is my pride and joy, but it is a HUGE money pit. I can't wait to park it and give it the TLC it deserves :D

I took off the m42 engine mounts to find this:

    and

I welded the cracks and then welded on some thick washers to reinforce the area. The drive side had nearly torn through! Is this a common problem? I didn't think a little 4 cylinder could do such a thing!

Fixed with my awesome welding skills It looks better in person lol.
