Got this on 11/17/11 with 192k on it. Traded it for an 83 GTI + cash. This is my first "build" on any car I've owned.
Will post pics this weekend. Have to take some better ones.
Its in decent condition with some rust spots here and there. It runs but needs some work.
My backround: Ive been always into cars as a kid, but mostly german or american. For some reason I have a vendetta against japanese cars. I previously owned an 03 GTI 20AE but had to sell due to being laid off and needed money, I went back to work and bought an 83 GTI project with aspirations of fixing it up. I didn't have the time/space to deal with a project so I found someone who'd trade a running e30 for it. So that's how I got it.
Aspirations: I want to fix up everything and make it a perfectly running car before I do anything else with it. My goal is to keep it as stock as possible with original BMW parts. NOTHING CHINESE! My long term goal is to drop in an ls1, but that's awhile from now.
Problems to be fixed:
Timing belt and water pump, don't want to risk the belt breaking
Complete fluid drain and change.
Troubleshoot hvac system, a/c doesn't work and heat makes a gurgling sound when its on. I'm not worried about the a/c too much, but the heat is a necessity.
Valve cover gasket, looks like it has a small leak.
Shifter has too much play, will probably get a Z3/4 shifter for it
New head unit, current one is absolute garbage.
Troubleshoot front speakers, they seem to not be working
Reupholster seats or find good condition sport seats.
Clean up carpet and repaint.
New e-brake console, somebody decided to drill holes through it, its annoying me a bit
Re-leather steering wheel, new shift boot and knob, new e-brake boot.
Fix OBC, the lights are pretty dim, just needs new bulbs
New headliner, or at least clean it up and make it look nice.
New driver side door seal. It seems to have shrunk and won't fit perfectly like it should.
Fix rust spots. I plan on getting a paint job one day, but for now just grind down rust and spray with some type of protectant.
Get rid of all the trunk gunk.
Get some HIDs
Get the bottle caps for my basket weave rims
My goal is to take care of most of the stuff before the summer of '12.
Due to the holidays and limited funds I wont be hitting this hard until after the new year. I wanted to make a build thread now since I have some free time.
Thanks for viewing! Pics will be up asap.
