Winter Project: AWII 316i Touring **Redemption**

Well, I originally saw this thing in August just after I finished the M42 Swap into my Brilliantrot Touring(unfortunately). I asked him if he wanted to sell the wheels, he said 'No, I wanna sell it as a whole. Touring's in this good a condition are getting hard to come by', and he's very right. I stopped by again 2 weeks later, same answer. He wanted €500 for the whole car, I had no $$$ at the time.

So I saw it sitting in the same spot about (2) weeks ago over x-mas vacation. Asked him again if he wanted to sell the wheels, got the same answer. So I decided to take a closer look at it and asked for the keys. First thing I did was check the diff as I intended to buy it just to part it. What do I see but a dry-on-the-outside 4.27 LSD. The interior is also very clean, seat belts work very well with little wear. At 200k km(125k mi) I was expecting the m40 to sound like shit. I threw a batt in it, and started it up to hear The smoothest M40 I have heard. In the glovebox, was the factory service book with all stamps from BMW. Nothing written or scribbled from independent shops.

Took it for a test drive and was pleasantly surprised. The motor felt strong and was very quiet, the trans was silent & shifted smoothly w/o the typical spoon in the spaghetti shifter, and the diff was smooth and quiet as well. The ABS also works, as does the HYDRAULIC HEADLAMP DIP!!!! These f'in things never work, but this one does. I was floored. As a bonus, the sunroof/frame isn't rusty and doesn't leak. The rear hatch has one spec of rust on the OUTside due to a paint fleck. These things usually rot out from the inside form a leaky rear window washer hose(common malady in the Touring).

So I offered him €400, and he reluctantly took it. I think b/c I had already bullshit with him for hours about E30's and he understood that I would appreciate this car and not part it.

^That was Jan 2012. It's been sitting in the same spot since then. Looking sad and sorry until.........
See update....a couple of posts below....

Yes it is. But I had zero cash after doing the swap and stuff on the red Touring.

                Yes I did.

I was gonna swap the windshield today but it's raining. So i'm gonna inventory my parts on the attic & basement to see what I have and what I need.

....Today. Why? Because I came across a motor that I decided was good enough to bring this sorry-ass Touring back to life. AND because another member by the name of 'Pino' has made such amazing progress on his wreck, he inspired me to save this one. If you haven't seen his thread, here it is: http://www.r3vlimited.com/board/show...=271751&page=2

Here she was in Jan '12:

                        \

                        And today:

I had cut a piece out of the damaged hood about 6mos ago to fix my co-workers Polo that was thru-rusted on the side sill. Since then , it's been sitting with a 4x4" hole. So i took it off today and threw on an extra I had sitting in the basement. Same goes for the valence, old one off, replacement on.

I have also pirated quite a few parts off of it over the last year like:

                        Grilles, Smileys & connectors
                        Cluster
                        Steering column covers
                        316i hvac
the odd interior parts-window cranks, screws, caps, etc.
Just a few weeksa go, I pulled the tank out of this one for the Red Touring.

                        As it sits right now:

And there's moss growing on my sunroof seal:

Updates tomorrow.....motor's being delivered and i'm picking up the exhaust...

BTW My Wife asked, 'Why are you fixing this one up all of a sudden?'. So I said there was an indescript banging in the red Touring and that I thought the chassis was bad/ripped(a la e46). She says, 'Yeah, right' with the look in her eye that knows another project started this fine December day.

Motor is in the basement. I came across a good deal on an Alu-Block m52b25. It's ready to have the clutch assy/FW/rear crank seal & bracket removed before it goes on the stand.

I also drove 270km today to pick up my Exhaust, I couldn't say no when I saw what he wanted for it. It's a Supersport SS system and is rather light, here's a youtube vid of an M50b25 with this exhaust:

                          http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sXPY33CUwAg

I'll be using obdII 2.8l cats for the swap. I'm gonna have to run an x-pipe after the cats for the single post-cat o2. The 323i's original exhaust went 2-1 just before the first cat. I'll be welding a bung into the x-pipe for the o2 sensor.

                          Pics are coming....

Well, gotta little bit done tonight. Planned on more but I had the first BJ of the project occur. On Sunday morning, the motor was delivered, trans attached. Upon removng the trans, the rt side M12 block/trans bolt wouldn't come out more than 1/8". Being aluminum, I was a bit concerned so I left it till later that day, I had to leave to pickup my exhaust.
It was getting late when I got back. I couldn't leave my crame outside in the parking lot woith my motor sitting on it's legs all night. So, I cut the head off of the bolt, pulled the trans and wrestled the motor into my basement.
Fast forward to tonight: I pulled the clutch/FW/pilot bearing and started to pull the rear main housing, so I could swap in the new one & attach the holder for the engine stand.

I realized that the cutoff bolt was still sitting in the hole I needed to use. So I grabbed it with a pair of vice grips and began working it back and forth. It took 15min like this:

And this is what I found when I got the bolt out:

Some asshole(the guy I bought it from I THINK) rammed this thing in there. In the AD pics, there was no trans on the motor. When I went to check it out, there was a trans on it. Naturally, I didn't think anything of it.

                            The Block:

Chased the threads, can get a fresh bolt in there a good 3/4" before I encounter any resistance so I think it'll be fine. If not, it's an excelllent spot to thru-bolt it if necessary:

And first battle-scar of the project, while working the stuck hardware:

                            More progress coming soon.....
