    Joe G's 1977 E24 Daily build.

    1977 BMW 630CSIA
1 of ~400 autos imported that year
    48,000 original miles
    2-previous owners
    tons of receipts

So i found the car on the Des Moines Iowa craigslist, spoke with the owner on the phone, made a deal, and took a greyhound 3 hours to pick her up.

As soon as I started her up, I knew I made a good deal. There are a few small surface rust spots, and the interior isn't perfect, but to say the car is mechanically sound is an understatement. No shimmys, shakes, noises, etc... It fires up and runs like a dream. I had her up to 100 on the ride home and it still had more and was as smooth as could be. Anyway as for my plans/issues to address.

    To do list

    1)Unclog the sunroof drains/gutters
2)Figure out why the fuel gauge isnt going all the way up to full
3)Source and install a new headliner
4)Replace the passenger side window seal
5)Figure out why rear windows arent working
    6)all fluids/general upkeep.

Its not a ton to do, but enough to keep me busy. In time I plan on really fixing her up (paint correction, rust repair, respray?, etc...) but for now i just want to turn my 48K mile gem into a comfy, classy DD.

    Now for pics:

yes, it is dirty. I plan on really diving into her on tuesday when it warms up. Wash, wax, and start tackling some of the issues.

Nice! Yours looks like it came with real paint. The 630s are a bit notorious for poor body construction, because the bodies were built by Karmann, not BMW. Get under it and check if anything's terribly rusty.

Also, sign up at www.bigcoupe.com and post up a thread, it's the e24 hub. My project's there, and you have me beat on car age by a year but I have more milliliters than you :D

Yours has a sunroof!?! Is it a dealer unit or a proper BMW sliding one? The early e24s came with either a sunroof or AC.

Prepare to pay out the ass for this. They're messed up on every e24. Pelican sells some shit called Gummi Pflege which reconditions rubber and comes recommended. Some people have taken to injecting foam or silicon into the seal to puff it up so that it seals against the window.

The motors are probably seized due to disuse, or the window switches are toast, or both. The switches are easy to take apart and clean, but the copper contacts may have degraded internally in which case you need replacement switches. The motors can be freed up with some grease, manual actuation, and hitting.

Some other things to know - you have an E12-based E24, all the suspension is super old-school, very similar to E12 and E23. E28 suspension things don't fit, they're all the wrong lengths, and almost nobody sells E12 stuff anymore. You can use swaybars from an E23, they're large. Springs are much tougher to find... Suspension Techniques sometimes sells a set, but I've heard mixed things about it. After several months of searching I ended up getting GC coilover adjusters and Konis, which should be installed soon.

Your interior stuff is unique to the E12-based six, and I think it's nicer than the E28-based stuff. If your seats are completely done for and you don't want to upgrade, I should have a set soon that needs to be softened and dyed but is otherwise intact.

If you have any other questions, big coupe guys are pretty knowledgeable, and I've been reading up on them for some time as well. glhf, I'm jealous of how much paint your car has.

Thanks for all the info. My car has a proper BMW sunroof and AC. Rare? The seats are in OK shape, drivers side has a small tear and some of the piping is chewed up, but thats the worst of it. Under-body is clean, no rust. Just a little surface, the worst of which is under the rear window. Also, how much of a PITA is accessing the blower motor? It gets squeaky once in a while. I signed up on bigcoupe, but have yet to be 'activated'. I emailed the admin earlier tonight, so hopefully ill be active there soon.

Never heard of a car having both from the factory, but the 77s are weird.

Blower motor is easy to access, there's a panel under the hood that comes off and boom! blower motor.

Got the sunroof gutters unclogged, all it took was some patience and a plumbers snake. You would be disgusted if you saw the shit (literally looked like shit) that came out of all 4 of them. Now i need to figure out why my sunroof struggles so much to go all the way back and to close. Any thoughts? I lubed everything up pretty well today and it helped a lot, but it still struggles.

                          Made some more ground today.

Started off with a good wash and then i got into it a little more:

Took out the blower motor, cleaned and lubed it up. No more squeaky fan! wohooo!

Also installed some window trim and other interior pieces that were in the trunk.

Cleaned and installed all of the trunk lining pieces.

                          Cleaned up the engine bay.

She is coming along nicely, need to order some new hood shocks, source a head liner, get a nice wood steering wheel, and figure out my sticky fuel level sensor and she will be 100%
