    318iS and 344i Build Thread

Finally I have some free time to make a build thread.

Anyhow, the brown car is still doing well. I made a trip up to RobertK's place to help him work on his own 24v swap.

Note the 318iS. I've been bugging him for months about buying this thing. Finally convinced him to sell it to me. It'll be my DD while the brown car goes under the knife.

    Workin' on the swap.

Later I got the 318 on jack stands.

Pretty slick for $1500. Got it with all the parts I need to fix it - owned by a friend who is a BMW tech, who later gave it to his brother. His brother TRASHED it. Ran it into a ditch, tore up the interior while drunk, destroyed the clutch completely. Poor thing needs some TLC.

The brown car's new power plant, sort of. '98 M62b44. I'm acquiring an M60b40 and swapping the heads and timing gear over. This bumps compression and gives you double valve springs and a dual row timing chain. I've got a six speed trans waiting for me in Nashville.

I have two more weeks before my friend takes delivery of the S52 in the car right now, and I'll be using that time to get the 318iS nice and ready to daily.

Phew. Some major updates pending - need to get photo / video up.

The 318iS lives! It's parked next to the brown car as I type this.

The last time the brown car will be parked at this apartment. By the time I finish the swap, I'll have moved into the new place.

It's new spot is over at what has been dubbed "Redbud Racing" by my friend. The house he lives in here in Knoxville has a nice 2 car garage, and we've recently started furnishing it for car work.

          Honda cafe racer project

Wet floor signs make you look official.

I need to get my camera back up and running. The ipod camera is terrible.

I got both heads off the M62 - there's some scratches in the bores but they pass the fingernail test. AFAIK, this is fairly normal wear, but anyone more experienced with alusil please chime in.

The 318iS is fun as hell. I love this little thing.

Z4m short shifter + delrin carrier bushings are in. Stock shifter feel was terrible - this upgrade was well worth it.

Tonight I plan on getting the rest of the interior in order. The shift and ebrake boots were old, dirty grey alcantara ones. They definitely need to go. I've also got my eyes on some mud flaps, and a cardinal interior. I should be picking up an e36 steering rack tomorrow.

I love having a new project.

            S52 is gone :(

On the upside, my girlfriend just acquired an '88 325iS 5spd :D

Dropped the engine out the bottom. I'm going to miss it. One of these days, I'll have a 24v powered car again.

Driving back home with the gf's new ride and my friend Ezra's S50 swapped car. Snagged the car for $900.

The paint is faded, it has some hail damage, and there are a few other problems, but it should be an easy fix.

The 318iS got its first bath. Had a nice layer of grime on it.

This weekend I'll be wiring up the swap for my friend and getting it running. I'll be picking up my six speed finally, as well as a driveshaft. Next week I'm bringing the M60 oil pan by a place down here to get modified for the swap, and I'm taking a look at a possible trade for a cardinal interior. Once the oil pan is done I can get started on engine mounts.

I have an S62 sitting next to it now - been short on time between school and internships. Nearing my last semester now. I'm also working in an engineering capacity for Chase Bays. Expect updates soon! The poor 318iS has been neglected :(
