My 88 325i ::Rescue:: Project Car II

    Part I

I've decided to resurrect my old project car that has been sitting idly by for the past five years or so. I'm planning somewhat of a tandem project on both of my E30's. After selling my E46 I decided rather than buying another car to replace it, I'd use the money to do some work to my primary E30, ( 88' Lachsilber 325is, a totally different thread will be created for that car) and attempt to bring this 87 (88) Bronzit 325is back to life, I thought of hunting down another E30 that was ready to go as a commuter for work but I saving a roughed up E30 that I already have seems like much more fun to me. I tend to be rather cynical but taking a car like this and giving it a new lease on life is something that makes me giddy. :)

Not being able to find another E30 for sale locally also factored into that decision. Sadly I feel rather alone in my part of the country when it comes to E30's and Euro cars in general.

This car came to me in terrible shape and I'm sure there are many cars that would make better starting points but my goal isn't to create a show car but to take this busted and abused E30 and give it a second life. For starters, getting it back in fit enough condition to drive will be my first goal, once that is achieved I can move on to more fun things. Though when I started the car did run rather well, fuel pump is dead at the moment but I've got one on order and I'll be installing that on Saturday if all goes as planned. Once I do that I can get some current pictures which aren't going to be pretty. Those will commence in Part II.

This build will be on a budget so if I'm going to be in the market for some items in the near future. Looking for used Billy Sports, HR or Eibach springs, Wheels in 15" or 16", Plastic Bumpers, and more as I figure out what direction I'm going with this thing.

I'll preface the first pictures I'm posting by saying these were all taken around 4-5 years ago, I was pulled away by other projects and responsibilities and the car was left to sit and collect that grimy film that cars collect up while sitting dormant.

    On the the car:

This car is a 88 facelift car but it is listed as an 87 model on the title, Bronzit, 5spd with all "IS" options excluding the trunk lip spoiler. Circa 140k miles, Body is rust free aside from the typical spot by the battery and a small place on the passenger floor, body was relatively straight aside from some minor dings and scrapes.

How the car came to me:

If you look really closely you can catch a glimpse of those sexy whitewall tires, I didn't take a photo of the side on the first day I brought it home just to save the poor car some embarrassment.

Some of the fun things that were done by the previous owner:
    1. The interior was black but the rear seat had been replaced with a blue cloth seat.
    2. The car had about three different tire sizes on it. I don't think it was driven that way as the front tires where so big I don't imagine how they even turned. The best part were the two whitewall tires that were about three sizes too big.
    3. Floor mat glued to the drivers side carpet. The logic of this escaped me, protecting your carpet by adhereing a floor mat to it with silicone adhesive, in turn ruining the carpet you were protecting with a floor mat.
    4. The dashboard had been covered with truck bed liner
    5. The aux cooling fan was being run by a switch that had been powered by a wire that ran into the trunk and was spliced into the 12v wire for the trunk light. Not sure how that ever worked because the only time I ever turned it on the wire became so hot it almost melted.
    6. The facelift valance had been replaced with one from a 84 318i as well as the bumper and plastic surrounds.
    7. Impact on the drivers side bumper shock mangled up the end of the frame rail.
    8. More weird stuff as I once I think of it.
    9. The knee bolster was of unknown origin. They cut it in the proper shape and went with it.
More photos, Keep in mind these were taken a maybe 4 years ago, maybe more.

This is just the start, I've got a plethora of photos from back when I started this little project that I'll be uploading soon.

More old photos: prior to surgery.

Valance replaced and new bumper holding appendage grafted on.

Back when these photos were taken I had an abundance of spare parts lying around so I swapped both front fenders with some that were nice and straight.

Bumpers were purchased on ebay but they have since been robbed for my silver 88. This car will be receiving a set of good condition diving boards until I locate some more plastics.

Nice dents from someone who didn't give two damns about jacking it up from whatever spot was closest to them at the time. Hammer and a block of wood do wonders. Unfortunately I can't find a photo of the much straighter rocker. The rest of the rocker panel is quite dent free.

AC compressor is awol, doubtful I will be putting it back. The spark plug wires were also rigged up rather nicely.

A little of the ole trunk cleansing:

Missing rear trailing arm while I replaced the wheel bearing that the previous owner utterly failed at doing. You can also see the exhaust where it was cleaved in twain. I was told by the previous owner that it was "stolen", He claimed he heard something outside and by the time he went out to check they were running into the woods. AKA he cut it off before I came to pick it up. Have you ever tried to cut one of these exhaust systems with nothing more than a hack saw. Not to mention doing it on a 325is that isn't jacked up.

Rather than purchase a socket to fit the axle nut they went the route of drilling the nut off.

A few more photos from the first round of work I did to this car probably 4-5 years ago.
I ditched the old faded bottle caps with whitewall tires and opted to mount up a set of 15" weaves I had at the time.

Crack free dash I installed though unfortunately it is now cracked again after sitting for so long.

The car literally morphed from fixing the valence, bumper, and fender. Good stuff man!
Looks like the beginnings of a fun little project

Thanks, I'm looking forward to getting back to work on it, I had high hopes for it back when I started but a ton of other things came up and it ended up getting tucked away for quite some time.

              that's actually an '88.

metal bumpers but larger (late model) taillights, deeper rear valance, lower rear fenders, etc.

Technically it is an 88, Hence the title of this thread, but when it comes to the actual title to the car it is listed as an 87 model. I explained that a bit more further down in the post. My best guess as to why the title says 87 is because from what I understand, this car was purchased in Germany through the ASC program then shipped here to the U.S. after purchase. So I'm guessing the titling process may have been a little different for that reason. I've also been told that it could be due to the production date as well.

Brand new fuel pump and filter arrived for this weekend, so if all goes well today will be the first time this car has ran in about 5 years. I'll be heading to the parents house where the car is stored.

Just in case anybody missed it, all the previous photos until today were taken nearly 5 years ago, I ended up moving and not being able to take the car with me at the time so it has been hanging out at my dads garage since.

On another note, I saw this 325es on my recent road trip to see family in Michigan. I was hoping to spot a few more but it was the only one I saw for the entirety of the trip. It was my first real road trip in my in my E30 DD, I was a little worried about getting stranded somewhere between home and North Western Michigan but she pulled through without a hitch.

Well I got the car started but sadly I have learned that the frame is rather quite bent. It was very hard to notice but after getting parked up nice and level it turns out that the drivers side frame rail is bent upward from a previous impact. Thus I say, Rest in pieces my Bronzit turd. You will live on through other E30s, your transmission will go to my 88 325is so it can finally be freed from the auto transmission and your engine may be donated to my newest 86 325 sedan. Though it is a shame, I really wanted to save this car. Even after sitting for five years it fired right up and ran surprisingly smooth for having a tank full of stale gasoline.

I was a bit worried about that being a problem due to the visible damage on the end of the frame rail but it was just so hard to notice until viewing the car from the proper angle. Though it will work out in the end, I've been needing the parts to do a manual swap in my other car so now that problem is solved. :) Now I won't feel so bad about parting it out. It will also give me everything to swap out motor in my 325 sedan when the time comes.
