e30 from Perth, Australia

Hi Guys, I`ve copied my build thread over from my local BM forum thread thread.

I brought this e30 about 3 years ago so its my build over this till now.

I brought a 1984, e30 318i, man, coupe. The idea for this car is a DIY, budget racer, set- up for track, sprint & tarmac rally stuff. Just go out for some fun.
    I think its got a m10 motor.
I havent driven it as its got a blowen head-gasket. So first things first fix it.
    PLANS
    1) ENGINE: as the head has to come off get some head work done. May look at a cam. Sports exhurst.
    ****ANY OTHER IDEAS GUYS?*****
    BODY:
Body is good, no rust but same small dents & paint is good too.
BODY MODS: none, no spoilers. just roll the guards.
    BRAKES:
It has discs at the front & drums at the rear. Replace front discs with slotted rotors, high temp fluids & good pads. Rear just overhul them.
    SUSPENSION:
    Koni adjus sports shocks (yellows)
    Springs, Kings or H&Rs
Sway bars, I think whitelines, 24mm front & 18mm rear.
    WHEELS:
will need a set. I think 15 inch will do with semi slick tyres
    INSIDE:
I think no back seat. leave passager seat, race seat for driver (ME!!!!). MOMO S/ wheel & gear knob.
    Remove sound deadner`n.
Will put out a call soon of parts & bits.
ANY OTHER IDEAS GUYS WOULD BE GREAT THANK GUYS :) :)

May not be the best seats around but for the price, very cheap, for the pair.
Will look good in the car.
I went for recline`n seats just in-case I get stoped by the cops.

BUT needs some fine tune`n. Take it for a drive around my area HOLLY CRAP it drives SO bad, bushs & bits must be really worn.

Started remove`n weight out of the car.
The body sound deadner from under the back seat weighs around 6-7 kgs

      IMG]http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t108/pazza2002/floor2.jpg[/IMG]

Cleaned up the floor. removed all the crap, so its easy to work with.
Made a paper template for the rust.

      Now in steel.

Finally got one seat in!!! Had to make up brackets etc, so the seat fits lower in the car, so my helmet has more room & doesnt hit the roof. What a job!!!!!!!
Now I just have to weld a bracket in to hold the seat belt clip. Now the other side!

        INTERIOR is DONE!!!!!!!!
Seats in & most bits & pieces. Still need 1 or 2 things.
I think I will chuckout the door trims, may get the carbon fibre trims from the UK.

NOW..... the next area is the rust around the tail lights. So its time to remove lights & bumpers.

I didnt like the way it fitted to the car, so I started to cut it up.

Cut about 1 1/2 inchs out of the sides & middle. This tighten it up the the car. the spoiler sat too far out.

This made it fit better to the bumper. it gives it a nicer fit and level to the bumper.

Used plywood to fill the area. glass`n it up. This will cover up the stone tray panel.

This is the idea I am go`n for, like a mtech1. will add brake & air ducts

Will look better on the car. but you get the idea I am go`n for.

        Front spoiler is done.

        Primed up.

        Another thing that came today..
        e30 DTM mirrors.

        spoiler fitted.

        DTM mirrors fitted too.

          Started sandblast`n the back-end of the e30,
This stuff makes are REAL F@#K`N mess, the garnet go`s all over the place.
Spent more time clean`n up, hahaha!!!!

Cut out some more rust. I was sit`n look`n at it & decided to do it properly, so I started to cut out parts of the boot floor & I will make up new panels & weld them in.

Will go and have a look at some e30`s to see what the bottom of the quarters are like & may cut and weld in better bottoms or makeup a patch.
The amount of brush insealer around the panels is crazy, had to burn & scrap it out. BMW really loaded it in!

Finished one corner of the back will just primer up & leave it.
Now to start the other corner. I HATE CARS!!!!!

          New bottom quarter piece.

All Finished, painted. Not too happy with the colour, its abit too dark. I think the guy when he match`n up the paint used too much black in the base.

Some more work done on it.
Fitted the rear whitline swaybar today. It was easier to fit than remove`n the stock one.

More work in the rear end to do.

I fit the 22mm sway bar & not worry about the stock bar so did the swap over......

            The work never ends....hahaha!!!

Some parts in from Ireland Engineering...

Rear shock mounts & rear Sub frame bushs.

couple of photos of the brake booster upgrade.
Its a booster from a e32 750i. A custom T-adaptor is used to link left & right front brake pipes to it. This booster gives you a much hard pedal feel.

            fire extinguisher fitted.

now I have to add another fire extinguisher behind my seat.

Brought myself some nice xmas presents this week.
A nice set of rims ( a big thanks to Nick-skindoggy for the hockup) and a set of yokohama advan R spec tyres too (Thanks to John @ wheelsworld).

              Wheels.....

              R spec tyres..........

              Rims are done!!!!!

I etch primer them frist then normal primer.

Then hit them with gloss black & clear.

will get the R spec tyres fitted on them next week.

              Well.......hmmmmm......

Got the the tyres fitted to the AC`s today. Got home and test fitted them to the e30.
WELL! the rears fit good but I need longer wheel studs and the fronts the rim touchs the caliper and the strut, SO it looks like I need spacers for the front..

Ordered one of these power steering block-off blocks......

                  Its not much!!!! hahaha

wanted to add a bit of an up date..........

mmmmm.........Carbon Fiber trims not as sexxy as Vitos but hey why not, LOL
Looked at the rear trims but I willnt fit them as I think the seat belts will wear down badly

For some time I havent been to happy with the way my e30 looks, the colour of the car and the colour of the wheels make it look all the same no contrast, so I was think`n of paint`n the rims black but I already have the AC`s painted black so with the Racing Dynamics rims I went with gun metal grey.

                  Before......

                  After...

Go`n to repaint the rear wheels as they must of had silicon crap on them and so I am not happy with the finish.

Well people its a big day in pazza`s shed!!!

I am go`n to start on my Budget BIG BRAKE KIT!!!!!

Today I received my rotors, these are shipped in from the USA. The rotors are 1990 VW Corrado rotors. This up-grade is popular on in the USA but the problem we have in Australia is this car is not sold here.
I spent some time look`n at prices to buy the rotors and ship`n and its not cheap!!!
Expect to pay around the $300 AUS$ mark but I did find a guy will`n to ship for under $200 USA$, and he will suplly the rotors machined to fit the e30 hud. In the USA you can buy some pretty cheap rotors from as low as $20 USD, I went for the Brembo rotor as its good quality.

                    So the rotors.........

the rotor on the left is the VW rotor the right the e30 rotor.
Now what needs to happen is the VW rotor needs the center bore machined out to 66mm as its 65mm ( to fit the VW).
You may ask why the VW rotor well it has the same back space`n as the e30 rotor and the wheel stub locator is the same. The e30 rotor is 260mm Diameter and the VW is 280mm diameter. So this makes for a good up-grade.

The caliper I will be use`n is the e36 caliper. I went with this cause a e36 weighs maybe 1400-1500kgs and a e30 about 1100kgs ( or less) so I think this is more than ample to pull-up a e30. If I am not happy with this caliper setup I can go for a after market Wilwood or something. In the USA people like to use the rx7 4pot caliper but the problem here is to wheels. some guys are use`n up to a 20mm spacer to fit their wheels.

the left caliper is the e36 and the right the e30 unit.

Now its off to the enginner of some machine`n....more up dates soon.

Well guys some great work got done today. I have to say a THANK YOU to Ryan for help`n me out. Cheers mate.

Fitted to the pads and happy at the way it all fits.

I have good clearance all round. So the next thing to do is chuck on a rim and see if the caliper moves freely. I used a 8mm spacer on the AC rim so I clear the strut. AND ITS A GREAT FIT!!!!! No issues at all.

So now its its all at the engineer to make the dogbone adaptor. we will see how this al turns out.

fitted my BIG brake setup to my e30.

will spend the weekend drive`n around and test all the parts, but it all looks good!!!!

Since mods never end, I thought I'll post up some more work been done to the e30, hahaha just think'n this must be the start of pazza's e30 version 2.0. LOL!!!!

in this photo I have fitted e30 inner tie rods to a e36 steering rack & fitted a power steering delete block. thats the white thing you see where the PS lines bolt too........

just have to fit the e30 outer tie rods.

and in this photo I have removed the rubber joint in the steering shaft & replaced it with a thin spacer.

Yes you can fit the shaft as is without modification, but it sits quite a long way down on the spline on the E36 rack. its up to you whether thats fine/not fine. A slightly thinner guibo/guibo substitute brings it back.

Started work'n on rear end swap. Go'n from a drum rear-end to a disc rear-end and replace'n all the bushs, bits and pieces.

                        Fitted AKG motorsport CABs......

                        New pads and sloted rotors......

                        and also braided brake lines.....

                        I also have another sub-frame.

Next up I will jackup the car and drop the rear end.

happy snaps of the new rear end.

                        AKG diff bush

braided brake lines, I also used ATE super blue race brake fuild too..

                        Ireland Engineering sub frame bushs...

AKG Control arm bushs and lines....

OH... flash discs in the rear too ( LOL)

also I have to add, a thanks to Jason from independent BMW for help'n with replace'n all the wheel bearing, boots etc. I also fitted new pads etc.
So basicly the whole rear end is brand new.

we fitted the e36 steering rack to my e30. Well it turns better and its as heavy as the OE rack, so I will see how it go's on the track in a few weeks...

Also we tried to fit my extractors but we hit a small issue, the steering shaft & knuckle hit one of the pipes. To make it fit, the pipes would need to be cut up and re-welded etc, and its just too much work to even try.

Well the parts just keep on come'n over at big pazza garage!!! hahaha.

                        Front sleeve coilover kit!!

This is what it looks like. it even has the helper spring...

work go's on in BIG Pazza's garage!!!! hahaha, so what did I do today????

I started prep'n the struts to fit the sleeve kit. I Cut the lower spring perch oof and had fun grind'n off the welds, then I finished it off with a sander.
When the shock arrive I will pop down to Ramp and get Regan to weld the sleeves in.
I will also replace the hud/bearing etc too.

Also I started add'n in my oil cooler kit. I have made a bracket hold the cooler.

                        All good fun!!! LOL

The sleeve has been welded to the strut and also fitted new hubs!!! I am think'n of paint'n the struts pink or something crazy!!! hahaha

                          New rear springs...

and wheel stud kit come today too. will be swap'n my e30 to a studs.

                          Front struts a done!!!

                          nice lick of paint

                          Fitted the stud kit too...

I love the sticker that comes with the shocks, " tested at the nurburgring " hahaha

Just swaped over my rear shocks to Bistein Sports.....

I like it when parts have a picture of the nurburgring track on it!!! LOL

I also fitted a set of Ireland Engineering coilover/ camber plates in too.

I just need to want till the new shock shows up, we had a little issue with the other one.
Thanks Ryan for give`n me a hand.
Also I an run`n a 15mm spacer with my Race`n Dynamics rims. Once I have the whole thing is all done I will try with the AC`s rims

                          Coilovers are now done!!!!
                          She looks good.

                          Next its a wheel alignment

riped out the dash out of my e30 and then removed the cramped out fan/heater box too.
All up it took about 20-30 minutes to remove the dash. It looked like its been out before.
                          some snaps...

my fan/heater box didnt work so why keep it!! Out it came!!!
