    92 Mtech 2 build

some of you may remember a month or so ago a thread in the general section where a guy broke his oil pan in texas driving between florida and california. i ended up trading this guy the mtech for my 91 325ix.

the car is sitting on slammed suspension. these are the pics of the car as i received it except these are not the wheels that came on the car. when i first looked at it, it had some 9 inch wide by 15" rims with tires highly stretched to the max. i didn't want anything to do with that crap, so the deal i made allowed the previous owner to keep them. these alpina copies were the wheels i was running on my ix.

as you can see, the car is missing its front valance. in the trade the guy i got the car from said he would send me an almost new freshly painted alpine 2 valance to go with the car. unfortunately, it hasn't arrived. after giving him shit, about it, he now says it was lost in the mail and that it was in bad shape anyway. basically, i am getting fucked on that part of the deal i guess. i would have thought he would have wanted to hold up his end of the deal considering the circumstances involved. i checked with mercedesbmwparts.com and they sell new oem units for about 325.00. i think shipping is free on orders over 100 bucks. not too bad of a price but still, it pisses me off that i need to outlay for this when it was to be included.

it had some knock off momo "racing" type steering wheel that was about 9 inches in diameter. it totally sucked. i installed this nardi classic woodline. doesn't exactly go with the car, but i love it anyways.

someone attempted to roll the fenders and screwed the shit out of them

here is the...ehm...skid plate or what is left of it that was under the car. needless to say it's not too effective on a car that drags the oil pan on the road.

the damage goes all the way up to the mounting flange

this is the new junkyard pan. i took it down the my local machine shop and had it tanked.

both motor mounts were broken. i guess this could have happened when the car smashed into the curb and spilled its oil all over the road.

while i had the pan off, i pulled the #1 and #5 main caps to check the bearings. praise the lord and with good fortune, they turned off the car before it ran out of oil

the previous owners did a lot of odd things to this car. so far i have only changed the oil pan, radiator, and the front struts/brakes, etc. this is what i have found so far.

    cooling system:
leaky radiator. i changed it out. as you can see, it is full of rust from someone filling it with tap water.

one of the aftermarket control arm bushings was jacked up. does anyone know who made these? i was thinking of contacting the company to see if it has a warranty.

for the time being i put a set of treehouse cabs on the car.

these were eibach springs before a p.o. cut a few coils out of them.

i was wandering the junk yard a week or two ago and found a set of bilstiens. i ended up harvesting the entire strut assemblies because i needed some sort of spring to get the chassis off the ground.

this is the wear pattern on the front left brake pads

here is a pic of what both front brake lines looked like.

i have a set of "ate" brake calipers/ carriers, so when i changed the brakes, i also removed the gurling calipers/carriers/ brake lines and replaced them.

three of the 4 caliper bolts were loose. one of them wasn't even the right bolt as you can see.

every boot on the front suspension is torn up from misuse of a picklefork.

the front struts are koni adjustables except one of them isn't adjustable any more. as i mentioned above, i changed them out with bilsteins.

the rotors were looking a little worn, so i replaced those too. while i was in there, the front bearings got changed as well.

for the time being, i plan to roll on stock springs. i am going to look for a set of springs that will lower the car about 1.5 inches. certainly not the 4 inches lower is was sitting when i got it.

I'm probably going to get a lot of hate from this but I actually like the look of the taillights and license plate holder being one big black "strip" on the back of the car.

there are definitely some regrets. i just wanted to help the guy out. he is douchebagging me on the valance now which almost makes me wish i would have left him on the side of the road.

yeah, it doesn't look too bad, but i am planning to take the smoked tails off an replace them with factory ones. i wouldn't mind painting red over the amber though.

i think some teenager talked his dad into buying it for him. generally, it seems like it was taken really good care of before it was "riced up".

today did some work on the tail end. i replaced the brakes, rotors and springs. this end wasn't nearly as bad as the front. those rotors are new. they have just been sitting around in my storage shed for a year or two so they have a little surface rust on them.

i don't think the old rotors have ever been off the car. i had to heat the shit out of them with the torch and "beat them off" with a hammer.

this is what the e brake shoes looked like:

the springs that came out from under the rear of the car are h&rs, so they are actually good quality. unfortunately, they were installed with no spring pads which i didn't realize when i was at the junk yard today. i grabbed some stock rear springs but i left the pads laying on the ground. i ended up having to tear apart one of my parts cars to get pads.

so...this is my new "stance" which is just stock springs. i am not happy with it this way. i want to get a set of vogtlands or eibachs because i would like the car to be about 1.5" lower especially in the front.

next up is making the engine run right. it has a miss at about 1500 rpm. not sure why. i also need to do something with that terrible aftermarket exhaust or at least those riced out tips.

You don't HAVE to run spring pads. I've run without them in multiple cars without issue.

I'd really recommend going with H&R Sport springs over those two choices.

thank you for the advice. those rear red springs are h&r of some type and they are way too low for me. why do you suggest h&r out of curiosity? quality?

i would have thought that one needed spring pads so you don't hear grinding/rattling noises when you go over bumps.

Eibachs are too soft, even for someone looking for comfort. I believe they will generally bounce off the bumpstops.
